No matter what anyone on any network will say, putting the safety of players in the league into question is way way worse than the pats backroom getting hold of a tape that probably every other team was doing also.

Since picks were being taken away, no way they should have gotten away without losing a first rounder.

Once again Goodell shafts the Patriots since the Pats hating pundits and ignorant fans can now always say that the Patriots rule infraction was worse. Proof = lost 1st round pick.

Looking back at Spygate, I'm sure as hell glad we lost a draft pick instead of Belichick for the whole year. That would have SUCKED!

Having said that we deserved neither. But wow, this is harsh.

Saints lose 2 picks, their HC, GM, and Asst. HC. That is just on the coaching side. Players will be suspended and fined as well. It had already been stated that we would hear about the Coaching side before we'd hear about the player side.

Losing a 1st round pick is worse than this?

I sympathize with the Saints fans. Wish it was the Steelers or Jets where I'd have no sympathy. Hate to see Payton's fall from grace.

That is roughly equal to the 2012 #45/46 --- yeah that is a bit light given precedent

If I understand this correctly, they are being treated much more harshly than the Pats were for Spygate.

Belichick: $500,000 fine but no suspension; Payton: no direct fine but a year's suspension and loss of salary or north of $4 million. Probably gone from the Saints and will have to convince another owner that he's worth the money and risk...hmmm...the successor to Wrecks next year?

Williams: Indefinite suspension suggests he might be done in the NFL. No one suspended for the Pats

Loomis: eight weeks suspension and a $500,000 fine that it isn't clear whether comes from him or the team. Or is it $500 from each? No one suspended for the Pats but $250 fine to the team.

Draft Picks: Pats lost a number one; Saints lose two number two's. Significant because they don't have a first this year so the choice was either to let them skate this year and hit them with their first next year or do the two two's on the assumption that a one and a two was excessive. Most importantly, this means that they don't pick until number 91 this year, which seems a steep penalty as it works out.

So, all in all, this looks fair and much harsher than what the Pats faced.

Losing your HC for a year can devastate a team, let alone the coach. To take the coach for a year AND take what amounts to your first pick in the draft away, wow, that's a killer. No pick until the 3rd round this year! No 2nd next year. There had to be more to this story than we have heard for this kind of destructive penalty

But I say here and now the Payton appeals and only gets 8-10 games. A whole year is just mind blowing.

Saints were also preparing for Vitt to take over as they expected Payton to be suspended, now they lose Vitt for part of the season.

Since these appeals would involve coaches, would they go to an outside arbitrator, or to Goodell himself?

if the latter, fat chance. Even in the former, the NFL could still make a good case for "lack of institutional control."

The real problem here is that Saints were told to stop and they said they would and they did not. Just so monumentally stupid in this climate. Payton knew about this and through his inaction despite being told "we're onto you" they still didn't stop. It's mindblowing but it had to happen.

With all the Spygate garbage, yeah we lost a first rounder but we had two that year so taking away any Saints draft options until round three this year will punish them worse. We barely skipped a beat and they are going to have to try really hard not to topple over.

The fines and penalties are not aimed so much at the Saints, but at the other teams--and the fans. They are a way to make sure there is no more bounty-hunting and to reassure the fans that injuries are accidental. The object is to play football and not hurt players. I think anything less might have been interpreted as a wink and a nod, and tacit permission to continue the practice.

Edit: Seems obvious, cuz that's what's happens when you're suspended .. .you don't get paid. But to see it put that way. Wow.
