The NFL has offered to cut New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma's season-long suspension to eight games as part of ongoing negotiations with the NFL Players Association and the counsel for the four players suspended for their involvement in the team's "bounty" program, sources familiar with the discussions told ESPN.com.

That would be an interesting outcome... probably to avoid more exposure and litigation.

Not sure ever remember the current NFL ever backing down.. can we get our 1st round draft pick back???

The 'source' could be the side that wants the suspension reduced in an effort to get public support for the deal.

Defamation is not easy to prove in court, and as most players could fund civil suits it would appear to set bad precedent to cut what the NFL claims to be legitimate penalties to avoid private litigation.

The NFL has to know this is not going away, so any deal like this would have to be considered a mea culpa that only fuels anger throughout the season for other punishments handed out if the decision was wrong.

The league has denied that any offer has been made. Could be one side or the other floating trial baloon to test the waters. The rationale for a settlement could be that Goodell always intended to reduce the suspensions on appeal provided the players admitted some culpability. But they have refused to and wouldn't even participate in their appeal.

The league is likely wisely concerned that a NO judge who seems to be looking past the law as it relates to collectively bargained agreements might decide to grant a tro and then we are into a starcaps like situation where the players played until the appeals court shot them down.

As stated in the article, this would hour be good for either side. Goodell has certainly had his fair share of criticism for a variety of disciplinary actions over the years. Starting back with our camera fiasco, and certainly recently with the lack of evidence made public with the heavy handed punishments being handed down. This offer would seem to suggest that maybe he didn't have all that much to act upon as he claimed.

Vilma on the other hand has been claiming total innocence, and accepting an eight have suspension simply isn't the decision an innocent man would make.

This most definitely is a mess, but I would love to the Ommissioner get good wings clipped as a result of it.

No, he isn't. If he did chose to settle it would be to avoid another star caps debaucle where lower courts intervene against law only to be overturned a year or more and god knows how many billable attorney's hours later.

Some poor olympic athlete who tested positive in London is trying to claim he must have accidentally ingested pot baked into some food. They're never honest or accountable and that is why you need a strong commissioner with zero tolerance and the ability to keep it out of courts.

Once again we have proven that we as fans, are fully willing to accept as fact the first report by the football media regardless of the lack of any confirming articles. You are guilty until proven innocent. And of course when the first report is proven fallacious, there is absolutely NO penalty or downside to the original reporter, so there is NO reason of them to be more careful down the road.

Such is the new age of "journalism" where clicks are more important than accuracy.

Yup. Much like with Spygate, the league (for whatever reason) does not want the evidence to be made public. Probably because there isn't nearly as much of it as they've led the public to believe. Some would argue that this is what the Patriots should have done in 2007, and what they probably would have done if it hadn't happened in-season.
