This is very cool. It's based on which team has the most Facebook likes in each county, and when taken all together it gives you a look at where the territorial lines are drawn for each team.

Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire (all Patriots), and when they were alive in the Playoffs they dominated most of the country.

The Jets have a tiny part of long Island. Thats it.

Amazing how much support the Pats had nationwide during the conference championship games -- way more than any of the other three teams. That's nice to see. And clearly, America wants the 49ers to win this Sunday.

Yeah the respect from Texas, and Virginia suprised me the most during the conference championship. Didn't know that Redskin and Dallas fans respected NE that much.

Geez...What's with South Carolina and the Steelers? I would have thought they'd pull for a Southern team, if not the Panthers, then either the Falcons or the Saints or something. Apparently the "Carolina" in the Carolina Panthers is strictly North Carolina, not South, despite the obvious marketing attempt by their name to represent both Carolinas.

Good grief, no wonder those damn Steeler fans show up seemingly everywhere with their damn towels! That map explains a lot of it. One of the comments said it best: "Steeler fans put the "O" in obnoxious."

And Facebook is pure evil, BTW. Just thought I'd throw that in there. :D

"In some cases, whole states and even entire regions of the country uniformly support a single team. For instance the Vikings are easily the only game in town in Minnesota, while New England (minus New York) appears to be comprised of entirely Patriots fans except for a small portion of Connecticut."

Those traitorous New Yorkers. I think we need to throw The Empire State out of New England.

I weep tears for the whatever educational system produced you. Here's a clue. New York is not now, nor ever has been part of "New England".

But thanks anyway, I got a chuckle out of your post and pray to God, you were only kidding

that was a quote from the writer? either way the poster was bringing that to light, it was not his own writing

other than that, yes, NY has never been New England, lmao, where'd this guy get a notion like that?

In the final analysis the Pats are ranked about 4th in popularity.
I think they will have Pitt Dallas status by the end of this decade with their continued success especially if we can get over the top with a few more SB wins.
In Toms last year he will get the respect he deserves nationally.

It is interesting to see the influence of the Vikings, ND, SD and Minnesota make sense, but Iowa and Illinois??..

    What happened to the Bears??

That blue mark in Southwest Connecticut is Fairfield County (the wealthiest in the nation, btw). I grew up there in the 70's and can't tell you how alone I was as a Pats fan. I'd get noogied to death in junior high whenever I'd wear my Sears Roebuck Stave Grogan jersey to school. My telling the bullies that they actually lived in New England and they're jerks for smacking a kid sporting their home team's jersey did no good. It's in vain. Fairfield County is a suburb of New York City, located a mere 39 miles from the city limits.
In the 70's, the Connecticut kids wore their Sears Roebuck Steelers, Dolphins, Raiders, & Cowboys jerseys. Nobody wanted a Patriots one.

And if this map was showing the dispersion from BEFORE 2001, before all the Pats deep playoff runs, well then, the ENTIRE state of Connecticut would be solid blue.
Even today, I'd say there's more people who root for either the Giants, the Jets, or another team from elsewhere, than there are people who support the Pats. All the media is from New York. When people wanna party or sight-see, they go to New York. Once you get past the last stop on NYC commuter railroad in New Haven, everything east & north of there is kinda no-man's land anyway. It's "New Haven and all points west". Few people have any ties to Boston there.

I take it you're asking what fans, not what geographic region. That's purple there in the majority of Nevada and Western Utah...yes, it's Cowgirls. Even in Eastern Oregon, majority of Idaho, Montana, and all the way to Southern Virgina.

    OT: Where teams' fans are

Saw this interesting article that uses Facebook "likes" data to compute some measures of fan intensity and, more interestingly, to see where teams' fans are.

They divided the country into its US congressional districts and in each district used the FB data to see which team was most popular.

I think my favorite bit is that the Giants are more popular than the J-E-T-S in all but three NY congressional districts.
