NFC Championship Game: San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons
    By: John Morgan

Even after last week's win few are giving the Falcons much of a chance. If Atlanta could beat Seattle at home, then why can't they knock off the 49ers as well?...

I'm surprised at the overwhelming consensus for a Niners victory. While I think the 49ers are an overall better team, I'd be inclined to call this a toss up. Factors:

-Matt Ryan's Falcons have been almost as good as Tom Brady's Patriots at home during the last five years. Although you can say they're 1-2 in the playoffs, I'd counter: tiny sample size.

-If you look at the 49ers away stats this year, it shows an entirely different team. They were actually outscored in their eight road games. We remember the great game they brought to Foxborough, but that wasn't the norm.

-The Niners have also yet to win three consecutive games all season. They've gone W-W-L (or W-W-T) all year. I'm not betting on a trend off W-W-L, but I'm illustrating that this team is not very consistent and seems unable to string a lot of solid games together. It shouldn't be surprising if we don't see the powerhouse we saw last week.

-I realize that I'm harping on the home/road factor, but I think it's importance is understated. For a second year quarterback, playing great at home is quite different than going to a hostile environment and doing the same. Kaepernick will have to deal with crowd noise, home momentum, and a lot more pressure in the Georgia Dome.

You can merge this if you want, JMT. The other thread was a Patsfans article, so I didn't use it.

Falcons come out throwing and move the chains.

ATL fans not happy about the DB draping across the receiver.

That devastating SF defense has shredded Atlanta on the opening drive ... not.

    That looked easy.

ATL coming out swinging. Gholdson got smoked there for a TD. A receiver like White is all this offense is missing.

    Re: NFCCG Game Thread

If the 49ers are going to use those matchups on defense all game, they'd better get a lot more pressure than they're getting, or their defense will be suffering a beat down.

    Re: NFCCG Game Thread

Impressive start by the Falcons, not being intimidated by SF and taking it to them. Now let's see how they handle Kaepernick's mobility. It would be nice to see them slow down the Kaepernick hype machine.

Matt Ryan if given time seems to hit those 10-14 yard throws (the TD to Jones was a just a lollipop). However, he seems to have a window with 2 huge WR and obviously a big TE that most QB's do not have. We may have had that with Gronk and with AH, but our smurfs needs to maintain separation.

    Re: NFCCG Game Thread

i was one of those guys who thought the Falcons gave up too much to get Jones — five picks. My understanding is Dimitroff called BB for advice before pulling the trigger and BB basically said "I wouldn't do it." Well, seems to have been a pretty good move. So often those big draft-day trades of that scale aren't.

    Re: NFCCG Game Thread

SF's defense hasn't been the same since Justin Smith got hurt against us. I don't think he's physically able to hook linemen and open up passing lanes for Aldon Smith the way he was before. SF was never a blitzing team, and their CBs aren't exceptional. With Chris Clemons injured last week and without any pressure up front, even Seattle's much better secondary couldn't hold up against the Falcon's WRs.

And that's why I can't stand it when people freak out about the Pats not signing Goldson when they had the chance. McCourty is a better free safety anyway.
