Of all the stupid things European politicians say...this has to be the most idiotic thing I've ever heard!

"AN overseas holiday used to be thought of as a reward for a year’s hard work. Now Brussels has declared that tourism is a human right and pensioners, youths and those too poor to afford it should have their travel subsidised by the taxpayer."

Get packing: Brussels decrees holidays are a human right - Times Online

Yes folks, you read it right...taxpayers should pay for those who can't afford to travel! :bricks:

    Tasha Kheiriddin of the National Post replies perfectly;

"This announcement makes a complete mockery of the term “human rights”, which is already so abused as to have completely lost its meaning. The modern concept of “human rights” has become code for “wealth transfer”. Since 1948 bureaucrats from the UN to the EU have seen fit to accord humanity rights to standards of living, social security, free elementary education, leisure time, and now EasyJet junkets to Spain. (Um, small question: how will the same left-wing crowd that bleats about global warming justify the pollution caused by subsidized air travel? I look forward to that little bun-fight.)"

No one has the "Right" to a higher standard of living. It must be earned.

Sounds pretty stupid, sure, but apparently it's worked for Spain.

The idea is based on a project in Spain in which holidays in the winter off-season are subsidised by the government for European residents aged 55 and over. Spain calculated that for every €1 it spent in subsidies, €1.6 was gained for its resorts.

That still means that one group of citizens was helping fund other citizens' vacations and the resorts.

And, regardless, the notion of travel -- other than on one's own two feet and sleeping under the stars -- as a "right" is another abuse of the term.

Maybe...but has legalizing marijuana and prostitution helped reduce the crime rate at no cost to their society? Strange? Maybe. But maybe it's also a good idea.

It's worked for Spain? First of all, after Greece, Spain is considered to be one of the next countries in danger of default. Second, how is this "working" for Spain? You mean it's working for Spain's resorts maybe. If I take $100 from you, and tell someone to spend it in a US Kmart, it'll certainly be a boon for US Kmarts. Of course, it isn't a boon to you, the person I took the $100 from. This of course points to a commonly understood point. The government cannot create wealth.

Europeans, generally speaking, are truly soft. Understand that there are those in this country, this current government, and in this very forum, who want us to be just like them. No thanks!

Prostitution & Drugs should be legalized today right here in America, the system we have now is a Joke.

If you want to "buy sex" if you want to "buy drugs" go into any school yard in America you will get anything you want, illegal sex, illegal drugs keep the scummy drug dealers and the smelly scumsucking pimps in business.

I think this is a GREAT idea for a non-profit charitable organization to do.

For a government? Not so much.

Just thought it was a funny way of spelling Mod.

Before, it automatically said "Mod" in that space. So I just went in and changed it.

Big Bea Arthur fan. May she rest in piece.
