This is big as New York is far and away the biggest State to make same sex marriage legal.

Gay Marriage Bill Passes In New York; Governor Cuomo Signs Same Sex Marriage Bill Into Law

I didn't realize it has already been 7 years since Massachusetts become the 1st State to do this.

Even though this website is a couple of years old* http://www.filibustercartoons.com/marriage.htm I think it is relevant to the discussion.

It boggles my mind that in the mid 1960's at least 20 States banned interracial marriage.

*Same sex marriage became legal in Iowa in 2009

Do you really think the Alabamas, Mississippis and Louisianas are going to go for this? I doubt it.

It's going to come down to the Supreme Court. Just like interracial marriage did 44 years ago.

Over time it will be approved by most of the states, it not only has to do with human rights, but economics as well.

Cuomo is such an arrogant SOB that he spoke as if NY were the first state to legalize gay marriage. Did you hear what the guy said? It was something to the effect that the country looks to NY for progressive leadership.

    Wrong Mario....

As a matter of fact, NY must looked toward Massachusetts for that leadership!

This is a great victory, and I do like the way that Cuomo handled it. He made it a legislative priority and moved quickly to get it done. I think he's gearing up for a presidential run at some point, probably in 2016.

IDC about it where are those Tea-Baggers and their quasi based religious initiatives saying sausage and sausage can't be because Jesus Christ and the Bible said sausage must pound the mound the pink named C and not rub 2 sticks taking licks to get the fire started. I'm w/ the pink named C... I just Don't Care what gender weds. I did not feel like putting periods in.

there are BIGGER issues to be aware of... like those damned vermin that make a legal baby.
If this is out of line let me know...

I am pissed b/c the DOMESTIC legal Population deserves the $$$ over an Alien Race:eek:

This bothers me since Legal Americans on Welfare are getting less benefits and if we took the ALIEN money and gave it to our LEGAL people; they would be better off as a whole. This is troubling to me in how this country "Miss America" puts out for the Porn-star Latino Fabio and she CHEATS on her spouse and we LEGAL Americans are the ones being CHEATED on by America. America PHUCKS the Tax Payers w/ this stuff.

Illegal Aliens of this country are NOT people that deserve the same treatment of Domestic Americans. We are not the Motel 6 of the Illegal American 's (whatever RACE they are Russian Mexican Bulgarian Cuban IDC b/c you are ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Conclusion we have more SERIOUS matters rather it be by War on Terror War against Illegal Immigration

When I was growing up in the 60's and grew into adulthood in the early 70's even liberals still had deep issues with race, sex and marriage. Woman were still controlled by men even in hippie colonies. Segregation was still legal. I can't even remember the possibility of same sex marriage as even being something on the table. I think woman, gays, and minorities actually begrudgingly accepted their "place" and were only beginning to speak out.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking? I ask because I think many younger people today take attitudes today for granted. I'm not elderly yet(except by my daughters standards:p). Cultural stagnation can be lengthy without some kind of game change to snap out of it, and even then the "snap" is resisted until enough people catch on to it. Young people today have the advantage of having had most of that pioneering ground work already done. It's kinda like someone loosening a bottle top off for you and when it's loose enough all you have to do is put a slight effort in to finish. So yeah celebrate the change, just understand that and know that a lot of struggles took place in order for young people today to have been born into a world where the change is happening.

no big deal. It says nothing in the constitution that gays cant be married. I am for civil unions and as for marriage, that should be up to whatever religion they practice.

i disagree with comparing racism to homosexuals

but everyone of consenting age should be allowed to marry, regardless of sex

at least in what is claimed to be a 'free' society

Either have government - state and federal - call it marriage, or call straight marriages civil unions too. And churches can call them all what they want.

About 5 years ago my sister in-law's neice said,

"Your generation is the WORST when it comes to racism, homophobia, etc..!"

Almost as if she was angry with my generation. So I smiled at her and said,

"Every generation has gotten "better" about those things and you can't blame generations and we can't give generations credit for change".

She just didn't understand that all of us (including her) are products of our particular generation. I also recall blaming older generations for various social ills I didn't care for when I was her age.

I'm fine with either one. It doesn't affect me in any way. I'm not excited about NY passing their bill nor am I upset by it.

But if you're a gay couple, please don't introduce your male gay partner as your "wife" and if your a female lesbian couple, please don't introduce your partner as your husband.

Husbands are male and wives are female by definition.
