Sorry, but both are good things... and, in fact, aren't enough.
Hopefully this will kill off GM and Chrysler. It probably wasn't meant to, but it will. Chimp II to doing a great job.
It very likely will, they can't make a profit on fuel efficient cars.
This will result in a sharp increase in the Gas Tax IMO. The only way to get people to buy new cars if they're going to be even more expensive will be to add a lot to the price of gas so the break even point moves significantly closer.
there might be a deal in place to have China also follow these standards too!
good news for the planet!

China and US held secret talks on climate change deal
The initiative, involving John Holdren, now the White House science adviser, and others who went on to positions in Barack Obama's administration, produced a draft agreement in March, barely two months after the Democrat assumed the presidency.
The memorandum of understanding was not signed, but those involved in opening up the channel of communications believe it could provide the foundation for a US-Chinese accord to battle climate change, which could be reached as early as this autumn.
"My sense is that we are now working towards something in the fall," said Bill Chandler, director of the energy and climate programme at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the driving force behind the talks. "It will be serious. It will be substantive, and it will happen."
We're all going to be driving Fiats. Yahoo.
So . . . do you buy a new car now to avoid the extra cost. Or do you want to get better gas mileage knowing that they're gonna increase the gas tax (because you KNOW they're going to).
The Obamans have put us in another quandry, who knows what to do. I know I don't. Uncertainly - it sucks.
I bought my car in 1999....it gets amost 44mpg
whats wrong with slowing emissions and using less gas?
On it's face nothing. But when it comes at the expense of personal choice, the free market and at significant expense then there's a lot wrong with it.
:agree: By 2016 most of us will probably want/need a new car anyway but I don't like the idea of being forced to buy a car that gets 36 mpg. What if it gets 32? Or worse, what if you need a new car this year or next? The hybrid choices are slim pickins right now so this rule forces those people to either wait and go the repair route until the hybrids are finally tweaked or buy another gas powered car then buy yet another car,a hybrid, in 2016 and for yet more money.
Anyone driving a regular car will end up being penalized somehow, probably by a gas tax. The question is,when will it be instituted? Probably long before 2016.
And what about the people who bought new cars this year? The ones who were encouraged to do so by all kinds of deals and perks?
you can keep your car now.
just mainiatin it, and get ready to shell out money for gas.
an extra $1,300????? no way!
just get the stick shift instead, and save $1,300, now you are even and will save $$ on gas. Or is it all about the convenience on not having to shift? You know you pay extra for that option....right?
why not think of this as an option thaty comes standard. This specific option is better MPGs and less money you will spend on gas and less pollution OPTION.
It's another way for Obama to tax EVERYBODY. Obama wants coporations to PAY and they want US to pay too when we use their products. Somebody have to make profit right?
It's a Obama's scam.
Awesome news. this CAFE stuff sounds delicious. More money out of my pocket and I'll be much more likely to DIE IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT.
Due to the downsizing of the American passenger fleet, this will probably only kill 1,300 - 2,600 people a year as we switch to smaller, less crashworthy cars. (see finding 2 in link above).
Not to bad a price for the rest of us to feel "green"........ Unless you, or someone you love is in that 1,300-2,600 number
Not with more smaller cars on the road, you're not. SUVs are ~16 times more lethal to other occupants than sedans.
you DO understand that SUV's are not held to the same crash standards that cars are...RIGHT? They are considered trucks, and by YOUR government standards have the same test specs as a pickup truck.

$1,300 is the opening bid. Just wait.
Oh, I get it. You're the new RepublicanBot.
for what? I hate that response...
you think it s bad now....Just wait?
PROVE your point....don't project something thats ghostly fictional, thats called TERRORISM.
Obviously I can't PROVE it. But things always cost more than they say especially when it's government mandates. We will be paying more for less and if you get the same car I am certain it will be more than a $1,300 increase - though I can't prove it.
Me ? I don't want to pay more for less. Thanks anyway.
And there it is... In a nutshell, the convenient, paranoid rationalization of con men everywhere. Bravo.
If the gubmit tells you it's "only" going to cost you $1,300 more, what do you really think that number will be?
Gas taxes are absolutely going up, especially if consumption goes down.
Personal choice is out the window. We're now a country where your choice is to join the collective, or die. Remember, resistance is futile.
Ah, this is better.
