The New England Patriots began this year with one goal in mind: win the super bowl. The Patriots are good enough to win the super bowl. The only difference between winning and losing for this team is focus. No opposing coach can outcoach Belichick when he is at the top of his game. No team in the NFL has more talent than this year's Patriots.
Every game the Patriots play during the regular season has two implications. Determine playoff seeding and get tape on areas they need to work on. Once the Patriots get 14 wins, they will have locked up home field advantage. The Patriots must finish 1-2 to enter the playoffs as the number one seed.
When your home team is standing at 13-0, it is easy to get caught up in the undefeated season. You may never witness it in your lifetime if it doesn't happen now. With an undefeated season and a super bowl win, this year's Patriots would enter the discussion of best all time. They don't care about that. They care about Lombardi Trophy #4.
The Patriots will play their starters all 16 games this season. They believe that repetition is they key to executing well in the playoffs. Tom Brady will play all 16 games. What has happened, is that the Patriots now have the opportunity to rest a nicked up player so he will be 100% for the playoffs. If a player is on the border of being able to play, the Patriots have the luxury of sitting him a game or two so that he is 100% for the playoffs. They do not have to play that player at 80% to fight for that playoff spot.
At this point in the season, when you see Ben Watson and James Sanders out, think of it as a blessing. They are being rested up for yet another postseason run. And just like the Patriots are probably doing, keep your eyes on the prize.
