President Barack Obama’s approval rating jumped 5 percentage points from November to December, fueled by dramatic gains among middle-class Americans, according to a CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday.

Obama’s approval rating rose from 44% last month to 49% now, and the results suggest the debate over extending the payroll tax cuts in Congress is helping Obama’s efforts to portray himself as defender of the middle class. The poll was conducted from Friday through Sunday, while the Senate was passing the measure with bipartisan support and House Speaker John Boehner was giving it a dim outlook in his chamber.

Obama’s gains appear to have come at the expense of congressional Republicans and the GOP in general -- the party’s overall rating has dropped 6 points, to 43%, since June while Democrats’ rating has stayed at 55%.

And a majority now say they have more confidence in Obama than in Republicans in Congress -- last spring, only 44% felt that way.

Democrats do particularly well among middle-income Americans, while the Republicans win support only from the top end of the income scale.

Its starting to look like Obama's gonna have to work about as hard as George Washington did way back when to get re-elected.

The poll looks like an outlier it appears they may have over sampled dems. When you look at the internals Obama has negative approval rating with both pubs and independents, from the CNN poll internals:

So they juiced the numbers to get the desired result.

It also doesn't come close to the numbers in the Daily Presidental Tracking Polls from Gallup and Rasmussen which are in close agreement, with his approval disapproval at 43% positive and 50% negative:

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll - Rasmussen Reports™

Nice of CNN to try to rally the troops..... ;)

    Fail.

Approval numbers corroborated by ABC/WaPo poll: ABC/WaPo | TPM PollTracker

Must be tough watching the GOP go down in flames over the payroll tax.

Unfortunately when you go to TPM and click on the poll to get the internals the pdf doesn't contain any information on the % approval numbers or no indication of the % of dems, pubs and independents polled.

So it contains no real information.

I would also point out that both the CNN and the poll you cite polls adults and not filtered for registered or likely voters.

This looks like Christmas PR for the administration, perhaps orchestrated by the members of the "Journo-list" carrying water for Obama.

Any evidence that any supposed oversampling was intentional?

or that the margin of error falls outside their stated confidence level?

I don't believe Americans on either side of the fence are too excited about any of the current available candidates. Can anyone truly be excited to have Obama for another 4 years?

I don't see him a leader of people...but then again, I don't see any current candidate who has what it takes to lead us in a positive direction.

The data is readily available, if you know how to use Google.

Moreover, I find it hilarious that you discount these polls as "Christmas PR," yet have no problem citing Rasmussen, which as we both know has a ~4 percent GOP house effect, per Nate Silver.

In summation: you have no credibility on this topic.

But you wouldn't vote for a republican no matter who was available, would you? People like you are part of the problem, not the answer.

Our answsers never have and never will come from one side or the other. As we both know, neither party has all the answers nor all the "rigth" candidates. I think we all need to learn to better open our minds to all possibilities.

Look at Europeans...most of them desire pure socialism. But they've all been forced to open their minds that many of their policies are just wrong from a financial perspective. Both private citizens and governments around the world are now learning that realism is just as important as idealism and that pragmatism is just as important gov't helping citizens.

When things appear to good to be true, they almost always are just that.

Before the Republican Party went completely insane, I would have.

If there were a third party...I'd be looking at voting that way. Getting tired of the same old, same old sh1t.

What about the rest of my post? any opinions? Agree/disagree with any of it?

Just using a little logic, for example Obama's numbers are as bad among pubs as they are good among dems a wash, but then he is down among independents also so the only way he is ahead overall is sampling enough dems to push the total >50%.

This is why the number diverges so much from the daily presidential poling numbers from Gallup and Rasmussen.

Actually I clicked on the link you provided there was a pdf with poll internals but there was no breakdown on the number of dems, pubs and independents sampled. If you have a link for this poll with this info please provided it. Otherwise I will assume the sample was skewed the way the CNN sample is skewed.
