Beyond nuts. He doesn't fit well on the outside, and he's the perfect WILB for the Pats - it would be insane to tinker with that formula.

When discussing the LBs please discuss each position seperately. As each has very different requirements and talents. It makes it much easier to see what the Patriots have and don't have at SOLB, SILB, WILB, and WOLB.

Not every player is interchangeable to more than one position. In fact only AD, and Woods can play either OLB, although AD has never in his time with the Pats lined up at SOLB. Nor has TBC. Woods has taken snaps at both OLB positions.

Where as I think the ILBs are interchangeable if needed, but each has a preferred position that maximizes his talents.

He also states something i've been thinking too, that we'll play a lot more 4-3 sets as well this year and mix it up, with Brace and Wilfork in on first and second downs. That allows the DE's like Seymour and Warren to rush

With the 4-3 option, the big nickel (safety in the box) and the muliple CB's we have I think BB could really run a lot of schemes this year and not solely limit themselves to the 3-4. This is why he picks smart players, so they can play these schemes and know their assignments

Felt this all along, that our Defense will have multiple looks and even though it will be a 3-4.. it will often not look like a 3-4.... the whole Tank Williams thing has been intriguing from the beginning.. Sanchez and the younguns will have a real test with our D...

Yupyup! :agree: Tank was going to be key and BB had plans for him and his position(s) imho til he got injured so early. So many teams are trying to set up the 3-4 and BB's known that of course. We're inherently 3-4 but with the versatility we've got he can really set up different looks to confuse the issue out there. The Tank signing was an important one, not just in terms of what he could do but also in terms of what BB seemed to want to accomplish.

    Sanchez will get eaten alive:singing:

    No kidding.

Sometimes you just want to come up with sub packages that put your best players on the field. There may be nickel packages where they put Tank or Chung in as a quasi ILB and move Mayo to OLB. It wouldn't shock me to see it. It would shock me to see him at that position for a series or several downs in a row. I can't even imagine a full time move of Mayo to OLB.

Jeff Howe has been doing some good work over there. NESN.com's Patriots coverage has improved greatly.

People say this 4-3 every year - yet we prefer signing Colvin & Seau than going 4-3... enough said.

    #75 Jersey

    Also

When we use the 4-3 we do not use two nose tackles and the equivalent of two more tackles. Warren and Seymour are tackles in a 4-3. Four tackles would be an incredibly slow and vulnerable line.

Jarvis Green and a linebacker would likely be the choice for pass rushing. We might or might not use Seymour at end, but we surely would use a linebacker for the other end

He does a nice job of laying things out in his pieces.
