NEs D not as bad as some think

Our defense is NOT even a playoff calibre defense, let alone one of the better defenses in the NFL.

However our defense has shown the amazing ability to step up in key moments. So while teams may run up and down the field at will on us, it is important to note that our defense can make a play in a key moment of the game.

A key stop is not a stat that can be measured, but it is a very important and undervalued aspect of our team.

Thank you Mr Jones.

Well put!

There have been some mediocre to lousy defenses that have either won SBs or come very close. Here are a few recent ones....

2009 Saints- Ok D. made big plays
2008 Cardinals- Gave up 26 ppg
2006 Colts- Reg season was last in 3rd down D and last in yardage

It can be done!

The stat basically measures how many yards it takes for an opposing team to score a point. The more bendable you are, the more you also kill the clock while giving up few points. The offensive analog is the "scoreability index" which measures how many yards it takes a team to score a point. Not surprisingly the Pats O is number 1.

As noted, our defense won't set any records or win any awards this year. I remember a Colts defense that was so bad against the run in Denver, I was embarrassed for them, and i don't like them. They picked up Booger mcFarland, but still were terrible against the run with no possible help that late in the year.

But they patched it. They simply started over compensating to an extent offenses didn't try to run on early downs as much. Plus they had Manning, so other teams knew they needed points and their glaring weakness was patched, they went on to the bowl.

Our D, on the other hand, doesn't have that glaring weakness. we are short on cornerbacks, and not tremendously strong anywhere. But we get it done, whether it's moving Vince around, weird pass rush schemes by Arrington, or our rope a dope pass defense.

Big article panicking about our third down stats in the Globe. Well, Meriweather picked off Peyton on third down. We also allowed a longest pass of only 28 yards.

Maybe he converted some third downs, but he didn't have one 30 yard pass and we picked three.

This is the type of D we've always played. Admittedly, we've jumped more routes and pulled more switches with our vets, that's natural. Against most good offensive teams, we're going to try to keep the ball in front of us and not allow the big play. i think we'll improve some, but we don't have an excess of players, especially experienced ones. The more times that balls in the air, the more we'll go after it and we're only 4 shy of the NFL intercepton lead.

We're going to score points, that's a factor. Same way Indy solved their problem. They'll let You run, we'll allow the short pass, not the long one. All teams are flawed, smart ones don't let weaknesses cost them ballgames.

All I know is McCourty saves this Defense.

well.....the good news is that the weather is getting colder which help slow opposing offenses where the pats defense is weakest. a few more dropped passes, a few more bad throws.

when it comes to 3rd down percentage-wise, less than 2 per game is what separates the best from the worst
