    Amazing:

It Is What It Is » Steelers-Patriots sets record TV ratings in Boston market

"The TV numbers for Sunday’s New England-Pittsburgh game were some of the best in recent history — according to the Patriots, the CBS’ telecast of the game enjoyed an average household rating of 40.3 in the Boston market, the highest rating of the 2013 season to date.

Since the regular season began in September, the only sporting event to receive higher ratings in the Boston market was Game 6 of the World Series....."

I guess all the redsox fans tuned into the Pats game, hence the "Extra numbers" in the ratings :D

A regular-season football game outdrawing each of the first five World Series games reconfirms the obvious. Which I won't personally expound upon because, well, some folks might think I'm biased against anachro-ball. :)

I still love the Red Sox. Not as much as I love the Pats, but it's all good.

don't get all mad cuz you can't spell Yastremsgenemski...look, I go to a dozen games a year...this summer I had a guy sitting next to me with his two kids...he had a diamond ring on his hand a good two carats...the kids had two of everything you can get at the concessions...at the start of the game in the first inning he turns to me and says.."say, just how many outs are there in an inning???"...yup...if you're looking for real baseball fans, they're underground...six feet..it's entertainment these days

I NEVER spend more than bleacher price these days...yuo can spend 80 bucks, get in there and find out you're BEHIND a metal stanchion...fack it...bleachers with binocs

Heh, my friends and I grew up taking the Green Line to the games 2 hours pregame to see batting practice from our $2 bleacher seats, eating our grinders lugged from the late and lamented Newton South House of Pizza in Newton Highlands. Ah, the 1970's......

In college in the late 60s, if I had no afternoon classes and the weather was nice, I'd occasionally catch a game in the bleachers for $1.25.

Nah, Brandeis grad. I'm jealous that you went to BU and lived in Kenmore Square - - I loved the Rat.

I grew up in Newton Highlands - - started taking the T with my friends to the games at age 11 (kids can't do THAT today without a parent). They used to open the park to fans much earlier before games back then. There were MANY more fights and much more weed back then also. It's a different bleacher crowd today.

In the 60s you could go to Fenway Park for a Friday night Pats game, sit in the bleachers which was one end zone and pay either $2 or $5, I forget.

The broken bottle fights in the stands were entertaining at that age.

We used to go at least once a summer and sit in the bleacher seats. The highlight was the roasted peanuts you could buy outside for I think 25 cents a bag (a little brown paper bag, no plastic then) and they were still warm...

I was listening to Salk and Holley and they were discussing the WS ratings and how they were down 20% from 07 and as to why? I immediately think, it's because this is a football town now. They never mention it but rather spend time talking about likability of the team, DVR, the internet, superstars on the team. The answer is obvious but I think they don't want to say it because they're the flagship of the Sox.

Re: NE-Pitt Gets Higher Boston TV Ratings Than Any Sox Postseason Game Except WS Clin

It's a football country now, many people find baseball boring especially the younger generation. I don't agree with it being boring, but that's just me. I said on the morning of game 6 that MLB was dying for the series to be over that night because they didn't want game 7 of the world series to do the same, or worse numbers nationally as a Bengals vs Dolphins Thursday night game. Football is really the only game in town, it's a once a week commitment and easy to have weekly gatherings so the casual fan feels like they really can follow it. Baseball more than any sport is the exact opposite, it takes a huge commitment to follow a baseball team all year.

The ratings story at the top of this thread suggests otherwise.

Re: NE-Pitt Gets Higher Boston TV Ratings Than Any Sox Postseason Game Except WS Clin

Here is how MLB would make me a fan again (as when I was a kid):

    * Establish a hard salary cap applied to ALL times (most important of all).
    * Cut the number of games to 142, crown the WS champ by Columbus Day.
    * WS home-field advantage goes to team with the best regular-season record.
    * Abolish inter-league play during the regular season.
    * Establish a reasonable between-pitch time limit.
    * Starting pitcher must play at least first five innings.
    * Limit the number of pitchers each team can field per game.
    * Each team gets two replay challenges per game.

Of course, these things won't happen. But they would breathe new life into a dying, tradition-bound game.
