It may have been a long time since Bill Russell played or coached, but he's not forgotten. The NBA has announced that starting this year the finals MVP will receive the 'Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award'. Russell was a five-time NBA MVP and won 11 titles, but was never a playoff finals MVP. Ironically the first time it was awarded, in 1969, it was Russell's last title - and it was the only time the finals MVP went to a player on the losing team (Jerry West.)

"Who better to name this prestigious award for than one of the greatest players of all time and the ultimate champion,"

The greatest winner in the history of the game. He won everywhere he went, even before the NBA.

Come to think of it.............in any sport, in any time period, there isn't a more definitive MVP role model then Bill Russell.
