Apparently NASA is looking for volunteers to go on a one way trip to put humans on Mars.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/opinion/01krauss.html

You'd go down in history, and probably have a town or two named after you on Mars, but you'd never set foot on Earth again. Instead of bringing 4 people there and back, you'd have about 20 people with you, so it might be okay.

    questions

What would it take for you to go on such a mission?
What necessities would you bring with you?

What would it take for me to go? I'd like to get my wife pregnant first. But I'd go in a heartbeat. I've always wanted to go to outerspace, but to be one of the first humans to go to Mars? No question about it I'd go in a heartbeat.

I would assume packing space would be at a premium so I guess a few decks of cards. Not sure what else actually. A phaser? :)

    Names need significance???? Since when?

If you followed "Paul Fitzy Fitzgerald" from "TownieneNews.com you would understand.:D

If you clicked my profile..... you would see that this name derives from a "Fitzy" creation. I am so sick of explaing myself....... oh my goodness:eek:

He sells random shirts and rants......it is humorous. GOD. If it offends you (get over it) It ain't my creation. I find it funny and random.

PS it is a way better name than yours "Titus Pullo" so bland and ugly

This is one of those silly stories that we will never see happen - at least not in any of our lifetimes. They've been saying we'll land on Mars "within 20 years or so" since the 60's. I'm serious. I have a book from my childhood "The How and Why Wonder Book of Planets and Interplanetary Travel" where it says there's a good chance we'll land on Mars by the end of the 80's.

The media loves to exaggerate things. To say NASA is planning a one way trip to Mars is like saying the US military is planning to nuke Tehran. I.E., someone once wrote a paper somewhere but that don't mean it's actually going to happen.

Yeah, we're not sending manned missions there any time soon.

Unmanned missions are much more efficient.

One way trip because it's too expensive to get back.

How about we send Favre over there then.

Over react much?i It was a basic question.

You seem very defensive about it. Must be the "white" part.

I'd go in a heartbeat! What a badass trip it would be, you'd be the C.Columbus of our day. No more little issues it would be about survival and growing, its a new frontier a new day.

The farther away I can get from the crazy's on this planet the better! but there is no way in hell they would take me unless they just wanted someone too shoot the breeze with:p

DirecTV with Sunday Ticket. And a lot of beer (hard to get overweight on Mars, there's less gravity).

I wouldn't go because of my family.
    But if I was single....

I would need a solar-powered hovercraft, a jetpack, a greenhouse to grow food (make beer and maybe some veggies) and an uplink to earth and internet access with NFL package and Netflix.
    And Halle Berry.

All you people asking for NFL Sunday Ticket should be aware that Mars wouldn't be able to communicate with Earth for long periods of time and you are at risk to lose entire seasons.

However, having said that, I think it would only be a matter of time before Roger Goodell moved 1 regular season per game to Mars, and started talking about potentional expansion to the Martian colonies.
