The other safety for Clemson, FS Clemons, that is the guy who stands out when you watch Clemson play. Hamlin got chewed on quite a bit this past year, especially in coverage.
I would prefer to leave Merriweather at SS.

meriweather at SS leaves a liability in covering TE's which is what the current scheme demands

as for hamlin versus clemons, everyone's got their preferences, but clemons ain't much of a tackler

You're right. They aren't. He's a free agent. And there are questions as to why he only signed a one year deal last year and not a longer term one. Was it the Pats not being happy with him? Was it him not being happy with the Pats? Who knows. But Paxton is no guarantee.

Tanked- let me make sure I follow correctly:
You see the Pats re-signing the following:
    Hochstein, Wright, James Sanders, Hanson

However, you see them cutting Jarvis Green, Vince Redd, Tyson DeVree, and Bo Ruud.

And you don't see them re-signing Seau, Colvin, Evans, Gaffney, Izzo, Harrison, Jordan, O'Neal, L. Sanders or Tank Williams.

Lechler from the Raiders is available. Get rid of Hanson. Sign Paxton to a two yr deal.

No, he's not guaranteed, but he's already the highest-paid pure long-snapper in the game.

That's false. Paxton's 5 year deal made him the highest paid LS at the time. That deal ended prior to the 2008 season. Paxton re-signed to a one year deal for the vet minimum. He's a free agent again.

As I said, there are legitimate questions as to why Paxton only signed a one year deal. Did he not want a longer one? Was he out exploring other options to no avail? Did the Pats not think enough of him to offer him another good contract?

He's 30 years old. Offer him a two year 2 million dollar deal. If he wants more money. draft one on day 2. the system has proven at many positions that they can plug their guy into the mix.

Who is the "he" you are referring to? Paxton? I agree, in theory it should be easy to sign him. However, the Pats had plenty of money to give him a good contract this year. Either they chose not to or Paxton chose not to accept a long term deal. We don't know.

Its why I have Longsnapper weighted pretty highly in my off-seasons BVA equation.

It was $880,000, including $150K in signing bonus--which means that it does not count as a vet minimum contract; it is also more than he made in any year of his 5-year contract.

My point is simply that the Patriots are already paying him more than any long snapper in the game, so going elsewhere just doesn't seem terribly likely.

Even if he does, I don't think the Pats will be targeting him.

Sean Jones from Cleveland. He would be solid under BB.

Let me help you out here. When I was saying a that he signed a contract for the vet minimun, I was talking about the minimum salary that the player can be paid based on his years of service in the league. 730K was the base minimum for Paxton. The 150K signing bonus is a drop in the bucket. And yes, it was "more than any year of his 5 year deal" because that was done under a different CBA with a different pay structure for the minimum salaries. But if you go back and look, other than the 305K, Paxton got the minimum salary he could.

Your claim that he's the highest paid longsnapper is unfounded unless you've checked out what the other 31 long snappers in the league made this year. Can you say you've done that?

While you claim that Paxton going elsewhere isn't likely, you've got nothing to support that claim. And you've answered none of the questions I've asked. All of which are perfectly legitimate and relevant questions.

Why only sign a 1 year deal? The Patriots weren't hurting for money so lack of funds shouldn't have been the issue. Did Paxton want to look at his other options? Did the Patriots want to look at theirs? Were the Patriots upset with Paxton?

All of them are legitimate. And only Paxton or the Patriots can answer them.

I'm curious why you think this, Box? Is it just the price tag?

Suggs would seem to fit at the OLB position for the Pats like a glove. He's still young and he's very talented. He'd upgrade this whole defense..

I don't think they need to take a RB next year with Maroney coming back(getting to sound monotonous). They can probably sign Jordan for reasonable money. Morris and Jordan were a pretty effective pair of power backs. I agree they need another WR but I don't know much about McDonald other than what I've read. He seems to be more quick than fast. I'd like see someone that can stretch the field and open it up more for Welker. McDonald had some good numbers a couple of years ago but it might be due to the attention being paid to the big "name" WR's on the Lions. Furrey is the receiver that impressed me a couple of years ago when the Pats played them. Older and signed though.

I believe the price tag is a major part of that, but I also have this memory:
I don't remember how that worked out, obviously nothing that has cost him playing time, but I think the combination of his legal history and high price tag, along with the number of OLB types on the roster, and the potential of losing cap space to a Cassel Franchise Tag, just makes for a lot of reasons to look elsewhere.
