Seems fair to me ... equality is not something to be taken lightly.

Good for Cambridge. I don't think $33k is going to cripple the budget. I've paid at least $500 over the years in parking tickets on Mass Ave!

If I'm not mistaken the GOP and Tea Party want less "big Government" and more State's rights but have no problem taxing same-sex couples.

I'm wondering why the city should even have to pick this up since gay marriage is recognized in MA. I would think that for all intents and purposes they should be recognized as married on their returns. Wouldn't state law trump here since, I don't think, there is any federal marriage laws?

    Federal Government:

Unfortunately there is a Federal law about marriage.

From my limited understanding, I thought that law was struck down as unconstitutional. It just seems odd that the federal government won't recognize a contract that has traditionally been state defined.

Obama instructed the DOJ to not prosecute gay couples under the DOMA. But the law is the law and legally married gay people are taxed for health care under Federal law when they put their legally married partner on their health plan.

    It is what it is.
