The defense minister says he will not, FOX, NBC and CNN report he will.

If he does, the Egyptian people will have accomplished in 2 weeks, what the most powerful military on Earth could not in over 6 years. The reason is simple...

    Revolution is organic.

How do you figure? An Islamic government is the result in both places.

    Well done!

    Could have this been avoided???

The reality is for some reason we have always tended to back less than honest regimes in the middle east, which does not contribute to our popularity..

Whats wrong with Islam? BF.....we are not at war with Islam....never have been...

Bush: U.S. not at war with Islam | The Michigan Daily

YouTube - George W. Bush - "WE ARE NOT AT WAR AGAINST ISLAM / MUSLIMS"

Egypt is an Islamic nation (80-90%).....why would they not elect an Islamic government?

If this happens, the people will have ousted a dictator who was 'elected' just as Hussein was 'elected' in Iraq, and Ahmadinejad was 'elected' in Iran.

Taking the wait-and-see approach here. I'm half expecting there to be some sort of change to the facade without meaningful change. Wait-and-see....

CAIRO—Egypt's military announced on national television it had stepped in to secure the country and promised protesters calling for President Hosni Mubarak's ouster that all their demands would soon be met. Mubarak planned a speech to the nation Thursday night, raising expectations he would step down or transfer his powers.

Mubarak had his palace surrounded by tankes, troops and barbed wire, he just said he isn't going anywhere, hes hitting the bunker. There must by AT Least 500K people in Tahrir square, maybe a million, this could get Very Ugly. The man is insane pissing that many people off.

Islam is a religion. I believe in the separation of church and state. As such, I am opposed to the idea of an Islamic government.

Because it fails to take into account the rights of those in the country who are not Muslim. Freedom of conscience is one of the fundamental rights embodied in the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. A right that is not recognized by Islamic governments (see: apostasy).

Indeed - and they have apparently taken root where a brain usually grows effectively cutting off the flow of all intelligence.

Whatever game he's playing becomes more dangerous by the minute.

I wonder if it was simply media hype which had him resigning or if he instigated the rumor himself for some twisted reason that only he understands.

Perhaps they could have him certified legally insane and get rid of him that way?

"2253: Robert Springborg, from the US Naval Postgraduate School tells Reuters Egypt's leaders are desperate men. He says: "The speeches tonight are not intended to bring an end to the crisis in a peaceful way but to inflame the situation so there is justification for the imposition of direct military rule. They are risking not only the coherence of the military, but even indeed - and I use this term with advisement here - civil war."

I think we have Bingo, i hope not.

Of course it could have been avoided. We should have hedged our bets and we didn't. Now, we're running out of time to try and fix it.
