Lost in the Ravens drama was Moss getting his 3rd 17 TD season of his career, which is an amazing accomplishment and something no other WR has ever done, not even Rice.

Top 10 TD receptions by a WR in NFL history

    1. Rice - 22 - 1987
    2. Clayton - 18 - 1984
    3. Sharpe - 18 - 1984
    4. Moss - 17 - 1998
    4. Moss - 17 - 2003
    4. Moss - 17 - 2007 (and rising)

    4. Rice - 17 - 1989
    4. Carter - 17 - 1995
    4. Pickens - 17 - 1995
    10.Owens - 16 - 2001

Kinda makes you realize how great this guy has been, not to mention how underappreciated.

It is very impressive. He's also a lock to reach #2 all time on that list and needing 6 TDs in 4 games could end up #1 . . . very easily. I realize all that matters is winning the SB but these intermediate records are pretty cool too.

I agree... a lot of people say "all that matters is winning the SB", but why not have both?? Why not have the Bellichick mentality and go for it all, team records, individual records, let there be no doubt.

    nice--thanks

someone with more ambition than I would get my gratitude if they put together a 'sticky-able' new thread with a list of every individual and team record that has been tied, broken or is being threatened by the 2007 NEP.

One thing everyone seems to forget about Rice's 22 -- he did that in the strike shortened year, so in only 12 games.

That's really amazing if you think about it.

Moss theoretically could catch him, but I'm not sure he could equal him.

True, no WR..not even Rice himself, has come close to that, or will come close to that. If Moss had a couple of things go his way, namely the phantom OPI's being reversed he would've had an outside shot at 22 in 12, woulda still been hard to get.

Still though, that shouldn't take away from what Moss is droing because breaking the 22 TDs, even over 16 games, was seen as something that would require a herculian effort, it didn't seem within reach for a WR.

Very good chance that Moss will have 22 TDs in 12 games. If he gets 5 combined between Jets and 'phins he will have 22 in 12. No not 12 consecutive games, but Rice didn't do that either he had an extended rest mid season.

I think RICE was great but I don't put a lot of stock in his 22 TDs in 12 games. That record is not as impressive as first glance makes it. Rice played 1 game then was off (as were all striking players) the next 4+ weeks watching scabs play 3 of the 4 games (1 was cancelled). When he came back in the great shape he kept himself in, with a QB, Montana, who I think played during the strike - he was going against DBs who were 1 month out of shape and didn't want to be there anyway. Also some scabs remained with the teams taking the place of players who refused to come back or were dropped from their team. Rice didn't set this record against motivated, ready to play, in synch, defenses.
All records, including Super Bowl, are very suspect that year.

You can't pick & choose which games you're going to discount. Thats like saying "if you only take my best 12 games of the career, I've had 36 TDs in 12 games"

Then same goes for Rice. He got 22 for the season. Not for a 12 game streak.

Ive been a huge Randy Moss fan ever since the article SI wrote about him when he was at Marshall. Watched him throughout his career, my favorite non Giant in the NFL

I dont know how many of you guys got to watch him on a regular basis (more then 5-6 times a year) before this season, but hes still an amazing football player despite not being quite as athletic as he was in his prime. Hes still an elite athlete, but he used to have another gear, he used to be even more explosive jumping up and attacking the ball in flight

Hes probably lost 10% of his athletic ability, and hes still absolutely dominant

    #12 Jersey

It's not like Jerry Rice didn't have plenty of 16 game seasons of his own to increase the record in.

Exactly..which was really the point of this thread. I was not focusing on one season but on 3 seasons in which Moss has gotten at least 17 TDs, something even Rice didn't do.

Oh believe me, as a Vikings fan I know this all too well. Moss is still obviously a great player, imo he's unquestionably the best WR in the game, but he was definetely more of a freak 4-5 years back. You take the Moss from 2001-3 and put him in this offense, with Tom Brady as his QB, and we maybe seeing a WR threaten the 30 TD mark. People don't realize he had all these great seasons in Minnesota despite not having any great QBs, and despite being the only real offensive threat, once Chris Carter and Robert Smith retired.
