The number of U.S.-paid private contractors in Iraq now exceeds that of American combat troops, newly released figures show, raising fresh questions about the privatization of the war effort and the government's capacity to carry out military and rebuilding campaigns.

More than 180,000 civilians -- including Americans, foreigners and Iraqis -- are working in Iraq under U.S. contracts, according to State and Defense Department figures obtained by the Los Angeles Times. Including the recent troop surge, 160,000 soldiers and a few thousand civilian government employees are stationed in Iraq.

The total number of private contractors, far higher than previously reported, shows how heavily the Bush administration has relied on private corporations to carry out the occupation of Iraq -- a mission criticized as being undermanned.

The VAST majority of contractor are involved in reconstruction not occupation.

They need to build the oil refineries, pipelines, and other related energy distribution channels. Yes.

    Ha Haha Hahaha Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You let Alex Jones filter your news stories for you? Dude, that explains soooooooo much. The world’s biggest conspiracy theory pirate in the biz. A total whack-job ON SO MANY LEVELS. I know he's your TROOFER hero, but for god sake son, this kinda stuff is killing the Libertarians.

The overwhelming number of those folks are for infrastructure purposes (as Pats said). It's called outsourcing and for many years now, it's been a pretty standard business practice in large, particularly unwieldy entities looking to efficiently get stuff done. Now, if you'd like to debates the merits of governmental outsourcing as a strategy during military conflict, we’re in business. It has it merits and pitfalls IMO.

Of course, you'd probably rather argue that each and every one of them (180,000) is one of Busitler's personal cronies and the was started just for them so them would all have job and neat stories to tell their grandkids someday.

Sorry dude, for the Alex Jones link alone. You know I gotta give it to you. Wait for it. Here is comes................

unfortunately, they're NOT efficiently getting stuff done at all, and the U.S. tax payer is footing the bill, to the tune of a half trillion dollars... many contracting companies in this largely privatized occupation are purposefully stalling, over charging, and leaning on the do-nothing 109th to find loopholes
and no-bid provisions... it's all quite documented...

google "Qualcomm" and "Iraq", for starters, and learn about the vast VAST corruption going on over there by corporate entities ... it was predicted, is has happened, and it still is happening...

anyone who doubts this occupation is largely about mind boggling amounts of coroporate profit truly has their head lodged deep up their own sphincter...

what's going on over there makes Enron look legit in terms of scale...

Sounds like what happened and is happening in NOLA, the problem is gov't and paying off their friends with all of their half assed bogus companies with open ended contracts... this adm. who is supposed to be fiscally conservative and not like big gov't, is a sham and just likes to make more big gov't and waste our money.

I won't disagree with a lot of that.

It's still a huge waste of money... even if this method is old news.

    I guess I'm a closet true conservative.

I think I was like 15 or so when he was governor, and I still remember the bumper stickers that read "Privatization: A Weld scam" or something like that. Anyone remember those?

    #75 Jersey

I remember being at a Dead show when he and McHale were there at the Centrum. I liked Weld, but he turned out to be another carpetbagger, like all the ones who followed.
