Try to sell me on this guy.

In my mind this oft-injured TE, is actually an H-back.This puts him in direct competition with 2 guys:

Kevin Faulk as the 3rd down back and Ben Watson as the Hybrid TE/HB.

Now, you're going to say we always go with 4 TE's for our 2 TE sets.

Why? I'm contending that with the new WR's, the offensive philosophy has changed.

I don't think we're going with 2 TE's now, but rather 1 TE (Brady) and Watson as the H-back, both out of the backfield and in motion along the line of scrimmage.

You run the power formation with Dillon at RB, but you don't need to with Maroney.

The blocking scheme is changing and we will see more 3 wide formations.

So, fill me in...if this guy can't be productive on ST's...where does he fit in?

HB = Half back, not H-back.

Now, where do you get that Mills can't be productive on special teams?

OH, as for his injuries, have you noticed a common theme regarding the Pats and injuries lately? As a staff, they are babying them so that they don't make the situation worse, as they did with Ted Johnson, Chad Jackson and Randall Gay.

    Thanks for nitpicking the typo...

Now, anything to add or are you all done?

There's a big difference between the two terms, so if it was a typo and DaBruinz spotted and corrected it, what's the problem?

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

How about this - he had an injury last year and is now essentially a rookie, trying to make an impact amidst a TON of weapons now at Brady's disposal. That and you're being WAY too impatient. Did you write off Ben Watson after his first year, too?

I don't understand why the need to buy or sell Mills at this point. There's a month to go before final cutdowns, for now, eat, drink, and practice your beatification acceptance speech. ;)

"Oft-injured"? He was injured his rookie year and stashed in IR. BB has done this many times.

He will be used on ST and in creative ways on offense. He can be used in 4 and 5 WR sets and may be groomed to replace Faulk as a 3rd Down RB. He reportedly has incredible hands.

Too early for Mills but by the same token he has little time to show he belongs. On offense, he was a pass catching machine in college, and ST wiz. With all the pass catchers on teh roster, he will have to show something on STs to make it, and that is getting pretty crowded with guys like Woods, Andrews, Mitchell, etc. If he gets cut, he will certainly sign on somewhere else. Nice problem to have, too much talent.

This is a case of passed chances. Last year he had the chance to cement his presence in the rooster with no pass catchers.this year he might not even make it.

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

So far in Mills' career there are not alot of encouraging signs, but it's too early to pull the plug just as he starts participating in practice. I still have a reservoir of hope for this kid. It is based on several factors: (1) He came from a small conference, and it has taken time for him to adjust. He was redshirted last year to give him leeway to build up NFL caliber strength. (2) during his brief preseason appearances last season, particularly against Atlanta, he showed flashes of natural pass catching talent (3) The Pats just released Q. Hill, coinciding with Mills return to the practuce field, suggesting that Mills won that battle. He showed some guts, because after Brady yelled at him, he excelled the rest of the practice. There is still a month to go, and Mills may yet surprise.

No tight end has EVER caught for more yards in a single season. We've just cut two running backs. The #5 RB position is Mills, as long he does anything in camp. Why not? He is a fine receiver, and can do a lot of other things. The issue for me is blocking.

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

Actually, and correct me if I am wrong, Garret Mills was the star of Training Camp last year in the preseason games, he had this entire forum buzzing about the idea of having a true H-back to play around with. Then he went down with the injury. This on top of the fact he is a 4th round pick which is an area we have gotten some steals, Samuel and Green.

Moral of the story is let's see what the kid can do, the biggest problem is he is learning a new position, much like our boy Klecko but we gave him 3 years before we gave up on him.

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

I think he gets cut, he is clearly on the bubble and is fighting for one of the final 2-3 roster spots. He apparently played some special teams in college which could help him. It was a strange pick at the time, lots of players were available at positions of need.
    link 2006 round 4 --> http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2006#round4

I look at him and see someone who was Mr. Everything and King of the Castle at some no name hick college (Tulsa). In the pros he is just another an undersized TE with no experience running the ball. These 'tweeners' look cute on paper but I would rather have someone who is good at one position than one who is Ok at four.

Plus he said something in an interview that made me question whether he "gets it". This is not logical, but no where in the forum rules does it state opinions have to be logical. Last year he was asked what it was like to catch passes from Tom Brady, he responded very unenthusiastically and stated "he throws an ok spiral." What the helll is that? He should be kissing the ground that #12 walks on, instead of being a condencending little jerk. Anyway that is my rant, thank you for listening.

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

Can someone explain to me why so many are so willing - or even desirous - to get rid of Mills?

The guy was an exceptional receiving TE in college and, although he is a little undersized, he displayed excellent receiving skills in the preseason last year.

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

I don't think that the pats are giving up the 2 Tight End formation, it gives them too much flexibility. When you play 3 Wideouts, it's pretty clear that you are gpoing to pass. With 2 TEs you can run or pass so the defence can't key on the formation but have to adjust on-the-fly. When you run a kid like Mills out there with Watson, your passing offence really isn't going to suffer much either.

Plus Mills is my *Binky*. He has to make it!

    Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

You act like Mills has had chance after chance. Given that the Patriots were very high on Mills coming out - they had all overnight b/w draft days to deal a very high 4th rounder and had ALREADY drafted a pass-catching TE in Dave Thomas - I assume he's got at least another season to prove himself.

This is ridiculously breathless, in the way that so many newbie chicken littles perfect LAST off-season. Relax. There was no way he was going to "cement" his place on the roster - or, ya know, "rooster," whatever - as a rookie, coming out of a small school. He was bound to get that rookie IR red-shirt.

Quite possibly the most idiotic thing you've ever posted. Stupendously off-the-mark. Especially that last part. So incredibly ridiculous that I think you must be being sarcastic and I'M missing the point. If you actually think he was serious about Brady and his "ok spiral," I would like to enter into negotiations to buy your house for five dollars. It's a good deal. Trust me.

He was clearly attempting to be funny. Lots of players have made similar jokes.
