Wouldn't mind releasing Hanson.

But use his roster spot for another RB!

Hanson had a decent day last week, actually getting off a good long one when we needed it; unfortunately it went largely unnoticed when Dallas had those two long runs immediately after.

Anyway, Hanson has only had 2 of 13 punts returned. His net still isn't good but I have a feeling Belichick is OK with him as long as he continues to make his punts unreturnable.

Miller is a better field goal holder. I think that might sway Belichick since Miller did a great job for Vinatieri and Gostowski (before he got injured).

Let's see, we released Miller for Baugher, then released Baugher for Hanson - now we should release Hanson for Miller?

Listen guys, we don't see Miller in practice every day... he WAS a great punter but he's 37 or 38 and coming off an injury ... there is a reason he has been released by two teams since pre-season, and it isn't because of his personality.

Miller was released from the Titans because their regular punter, Craig Hentrich, came back from a back injury. Miller only punted in game 3. He's been inactive since.

Miller's 40.3 punting avg. is better than Hanson's 37.1 avg. but Miller's only played in one game this season so we don't really know how effective he truly is at this point, and we don't know if his body will hold up over the course of the season.

This might sound funny but I liked Baugher before they released him and thought he'd win the job. Who knows maybe he had attitude problems? Wouldn't surprise me considering he punched his own father just after his release from NE.

Now, Hanson's career avg is 42.7 and he did seem to punt well against the Cowboys so maybe he's just starting to knock the rust off? For this reason I'd give him a few more weeks to prove himself then if he's struggling I'd replace him.

Player is still available too.

Isn't BB obligated to re-sign Ken Walter at this point?

Don't know about career averages; but at least this season it has been kind of very strongly intimated that BB has been telling Hanson to kick them angled in more than one game to keep them away from dangerous return men.

Angling your kicks is naturally going to get you a number of kicks that come up short. For guys who get a bunch of yards on the bounce that can be a pretty significant differential. I would have a hard time believing BB would cut a guy for a lower net; after he told him to do something that cut down on his net.

Plus I believe BB does not measure punters based on net or even gross punt yardage. I think as long as they get it at least 35 yards from scrimmage routinely before the return; he grades them on HANG TIME.

BB is all about not giving up the big play. Remember the "bend but don't break" days of our defense. If the ball is up there long enough for the coverage team to get down there it doesn't matter whether it is one or two yards shorter than somebody else. but if the hang time is a second less that return guy can make up about 10 yards and possibly break one for 6 real quick.

So all in all I think you guys looking for some new punter to come in are barking up the wrong tree.

Why can't the kicker punt too?
I never got that.
It's not that much different.
Either way you strike the ball with your foot.
And having a multi-tasking kicker would save a roster spot but force you to carry a punter/kicker on the practice squad.

Those of you who play/coached on a somewhat professional basis, or sound like you do (I aim to place myself in this category), feel free to respond

Never should have been released.

Although, you should admit Hansen looked pretty good in pre-season.

All I know is Hanson sucks!

He's DEAD LAST in average punt distance and 30th in avg net distance.

He has to be the worst punter in the league BY FAR!!!

Please let's get a better punter. I know we don't need it now, but we might in the playoffs.

Does any web site track HANG TIME statistics on punters?

You'll either get flamed or ignored, so I'll say there is NO reason why your proposition can't be. The fact that teams don't do this is pretty atrocious. The league was built on such manuevers and Hall of Fame players exist for such reasons. Hell, imagine the fake possibilities. So they say: run a reverse, that's crazy! No, no! Gaps, gaps, gasp (sic).

Wouldn't really attribute the best punter. It's a situational position. Squibs, coffins, etc. Do you want a 5.2 hang time guy that always kicks from his 20 or a 3.9 guy who nails it within (at least) the 30. Punters are last resort guys.

This league is a league of specialists.

there is no reason you can't. Heck we have the guy on our team who punted, received and kicked a FG all in one game.

But this thread started off with somebody implying we need to get rid of our punter (assumedly because he has a NET that is 2.8 yards less than Miller's.)

And now you want to replace him with another guy who if he is more a FG kicker; has a lower NET than that. Or if he is a punt specialist do you want to get a FG kicker with a 60% hit rate?

If we were desperate to save a roster spot; could certainly do it. but I think it gives you situational disadvantages that would be worse in the long run unless you happened to get the kicker "Freak of nature" who could be exceptional at both areas. (havent seen him lately).
