Mikhail Kalashnikov has died. While Eugene Stoner made millions off the design of the M16, Kalashnikov died almost penniless. He hated what his gun was used for, he designed it for the defense of the Mother Land, not for terrorists or thugs.

    Rest in piece.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Soviet inventor and namesake of the world's most popular gun, the AK-47, died Monday. He was 94.

Born into a peasant family in Siberia, Kalashnikov was at one point a railroad clerk and aspired to design farm equipment.

But his name will forever be linked with a tool of death and destruction, the "Avtomat Kalashnikov."

Does anyone really think that way? An AK can be used to storm a home and kill and rape the inhabitants just as easy as it can be used to defend a home against people who want to kill and rape the inhabitants. If Kalashnikov didn't invent it someone else would have made the Russian service rifle and they would have exported that to all their commie allies and people would make knock offs and the world would be exactly the same.

Still one of my favorite video game guns ... pretty accurate and it packs a punch.

Put a scope on it and you can rake.

There are something like 100 million AK 47's floating around the world, used by terrorists everywhere...

Remember during the Iraq war when the US lost 4 planeloads of AK 47's, about 200,000 of these weapons which were flown from Bosnia via some backchannels, got lost and wound up in the hands of terrorists.....

Well, he wasn't exactly penniless. He made no profit from the manufacture of his namesake rifle, but he had plenty of other revenue streams by the end of his life. That's not to mention that his pension from the Russian Federation was fairly substantial by Russian standards.

And it's true that he was disappointed about how his rifles came to be used. But he rightly distanced himself from all that. 1) He didn't make a cent off of them and 2) he rightly points the fingers at the politicians.

I remember seeing an interview where he said that he was deaf from having fired millions of rounds from his rifles.

    I've got a few knockoff AKs (Romanian/East German/Bulgarian). Thanks Mikhail for a well-designed weapon.

Think of all the lives that weapon has taken over its existence. It makes you wonder how one would feel if they were the inventor of such an instrument. One the one hand, it's arguably the most effective assault rifle ever made. On the other, it's also been used to kill like no other. Probably a the extreme meaning of bitter sweet.

Any of you guys play BF4 on the PC?

It's been the same old story over there for some time. We give the Iraqi police night vision goggles and they "get robbed" and insurgents get more accurate at night. The level of corruption in those countries is basically institutional.

Do not forget about the 9 Billion Dollars that Bremer brought with him to Iraq and then lost it???

Someone made a lot of money, and I suspect it was not an Iraqi.... sadly no one cared.

We do this shyt all the time and no one cares....

Oh stop carping about 200,000 AKs "lost," it was barely even a news story back then.

Now Fast & Furious, which let 1,700 guns go missing, that's a multi-year scandal right?

I wonder how he felt when he made the really big time... and his work showed up on the national flag of Mozambique

Welp, I guess you guys can drink to him now...
