Mike Leach was just cut by the Broncos. He was Scott O'Brien's

long snapper at Denver.

Yeah, when folks here started wondering who would replace Paxton, my first thought was whomever it was that Paxton was replacing.

ok, maybe this will be our next move. hopefully we can sign a LS and a CB in the next day or two

Cutting Leach made absoluetly no sense...

He's been one of the best LS in the league for YEARS now...McDaniels comes right in a signs his own guy to a 5 year deal and cuts the guy who's done a GREAT job for years...

If you traded Paxton for Leach, you'd be getting a good deal...

Yah just beat me to the punch.

Sounds like a good swap, as long as he signs for a reasonable contract number.

Here's an analysis of both players. Both are quality LSs.

He is a quality snapper who gets good velocity on his snaps as well as good accuracy. He does a consistent job of putting the ball in the holder's hands on the short snap and does not force the punter to adjust to poor snaps on the deep snap. He does not show much of any pre-snap movement, which can give away the snap count to opponents and shows good effort to make some kind of block after the snap. He lacks the size and bulk to be a top blocker on punt teams and will need help on both sides, but will show effort to get downfield and get involved in coverage although he lacks the speed and agility to make many open-field tackles.

Lonie Paxton
Birth Date March 13, 1978
Birth Place Anaheim, CA
Height 6-2
Weight 260 lbs.
Age 30
Position C
Experience 9 years
College Sacramento State

Paxton is an eight-year veteran who has had a solid career as a long snapper. He is very consistent with his accuracy as both a long and short snapper. Paxton has a very small hitch in his delivery, but gets it back quickly. He does a nice job to snap and step to cover his gap responsibility as a blocker. He has decent speed to cover in his lane and can be effective to make a tackle in the open field. He does a nice job changing his timing to keep the defense from getting a jump on his snap. He is a tough, competitive player who is good at his craft. It's likely Paxton will be back with the Patriots unless he tries to get an unreasonable payday.

Go get him, if he's reasonably priced. Can he play TE at all? If he could, I'd be thrilled to see us trade Dave Thomas and save a roster spot.

An interesting sidebar on Leach is that he was a pretty good

punter in college.
