He was on the ESPN Preseason show and he multiple times talked about the Pats' defense negatively. He pointed out "I know it is preseason, but the Pats had the 32nd ranked defense in the league this preseason" (granted he failed to point out that only 27 of the 96 points allowed was by the first defense) and when Trey Wingo asked why no one picked the the Pats for the Super Bowl winner on the panel, Smith replied "Defense wins championships". He did speak glowingly about Brady though.

Don't care what ESPN has to say.

Our defense is a little unknown, but we still have bill, and he is still the same.

2 out of the 3 Super Bowls we weren't picked as consensus favorites. We had question marks and we weren't perfect.

    Let 'em talk.

dont care about what he says but objectively its not wrong to say that our defense has questions right now. jason campbell of all people was able to throw at and over our corners for e.g . yes preseason granted but nothing wrong in admitting that we have lot of unknown on defense at this juncture and how it will play out unlike the offense.

Dear Lord! The koolaide is in full effect here. I'll paraphrase: the defense is a huge question mark and it mostly looked like crap this pre-season. Who can argue with this? Also, he said defense wins championships. Who can argue with this?

Personally, I think (hope) the defense - and alll it's new parts and functions - will get better as the season goes on. A geliing of sorts. If the offense is as good as it could be - well, it will carry the defense 'till it gets "there."

I like Smith. I think the D will surprise a tad this year, but I'm not expecting 03-04 results on D... I'm hoping the O is like 07 all the way through, including the final game.

This is awesome. I hope all the hate from the media concerning our D catches like a California wildfire and spreaddds.

Forget being favorites year in and year out.

Forget going undefeated during the regular season. Where did that get us?

Our D can look shaky to start, but Brady will still win us some games. All of our new acquisitions, the FA's and the Rooks will figure it out, and BB and his staff will figure his new toys out. When the game matters most, they'll be making less mistakes.

Here's a salute to losin some games this yr. and getting angry again. :eat1:

The D was not top ten with Sey (in defensive efficiency). It's an evolving process and certainly has room to improve.

Smith is not wrong to question our D.

Michael Smith is one of the best NFL reporters there is. It's good to see he has a backbone rather than just parrot you guys are the greatest team ever. Don't get me wrong, you're the class of the division and probably sweep it, but there are some major ?s marks. And the Seymour move was great but trading away your best pass rusher won't help you this year.

Hey guys i'm new here... 1st post Woohoo! Anyway i think the Defense is going to be just fine. They have played well in the past without Dick Seymour when he was injured. They are younger and faster at LB and Wright, Green and the new guys will fill the role sufficiently i think. Plus i think at times in some of those weird alignments BB likes to use (and some normal ones also) i think we will see Adalius or Banta-Cain on the edge. People forget that Thomas played all over the field for Baltimore and he played a good amount of DL. The Secondary, particularly corner is still the biggest question mark in my opinion.

...and the question for any objective observer is how much it will hurt (as this was clearly a move that was made with the future in mind). truth is none of us can know at this point.

this is the time of year when people tend to panic about the unknown, so the message for Pats fans, of which I assume you are not one, is not to panic but rather to let things unfold. there are just too many weapons on this team to assume that they won't be part of the picture, one way or the other, come January.

Eh, I like Smith but his opinion and everyone else's opinion on ESPN doesn't matter to me. A year ago, they were all saying how we needed to get younger, our defense was way too old, long in the tooth, etc. etc. etc. Now we ARE younger on defense and it's still not good enough. Either way, we can't win. We as Pats fans should know that by now.

Apparently, some of the clownery is still saying we are old and slow. What else they going to talk about?

Patsfans.com has passionate Patriots fans who know much about football. For days we have been speculating and can't figure out what going to happen.

How can anyone expect a bunch of ignorant Pat hating clowns to have any answers?

Smith has a good relationship with Belichick and the Pats. Smith had the exclusive on Belichick's contract extension that he scooped right after Spygate. He even sat on the story on the Pats' request since he had it for a couple months before he ran with it.

Also, Smith was also one of the reporters who were quick to dispell Tom Curran's "Brady is way behind schedule and could need surgery again piece" where he cited sources close to Brady and the team.

I don't think Smith is all that down on the Pats especially since he is probably one of the most connected reporters to this team nationally or locally. I just thought his defensive rankings in preseason especially since the rankings don't differentiate between starters or back ups is just a little silly.

How do you know that? Have you talked to Smith or Belichick?

Smith did defend Belichick quite a bit on Spygate while the rest of ESPN blasted him.

Unless you have inside knowledge, you really are just guessing. Belichick has never let on about which reporters he likes and hates although he and Borges have had some go arounds in press conferences. Smith as a reporter wouldn't say who he likes or hates on the air or in print.

Michael Smith is an idiot. You don't make claims about the season based on preseason stats.

2007 Preseason: Pats ranked 21st in overall defense. Pats ranked 11th in scoring defense.

2007 Regular Season: Pats finished 4th in overall defense, and also ranked 4th in points allowed.

2008 Preseason: Pats ranked 17th in overall defense. They ranked 27th in scoring defense.

2008 Regular Season: Pats finished with the 10th overall defense; they ranked 8th in points surrendered.

As you can see, preseason doesn't mean ****.

I listen... Holley has eluded to it in the past as have some of the locals. I can't remember exactly what it was over but it made their relationship pretty tense just before he left. And Bill isn't one to forgive and forget.

That was my reaction - my post wasn't a kool aid drinking opinion on the defense just my LOL at his reason for thinking there's a problem. I could see our defense being anywhere from above average to downright awful this season but the offense will still score enough to win in most games.
