Michael Lombardi says Peyton Manning had 3rd neck surgery today

Re: So if the Colts go 4-12 ....

Peyton Manning frightens the living **** out of me whenever we play the Colts.

That is enough alone to have all the respect in the world for the guy. Get well soon, just make sure it's not before you play us.

Re: OT: Breaking news, Manning has another surgery on neck.

Problem is that it's a no-win situation for us fans. If the team does poorly, they will use it as excuse for how Manning is better than Brady (and the whole "system QB" **** again). If the team plays well, that would suck as we all all hate the dolts. I guess a mediocre season, missing the playoffs by a game or two would be best-case for me.

Well the Colts only won 10 games last year. Even at 6-10, their dropoff would still be less severe than ours was in 2008.

As many of you know, I've made fun of Manning many time on this site. I will, no doubt, continue to do so in the future.

However, having just heard about his surgery, and the type he had, today I'm only going to say:

Peyton, I hope that you will have a full and comfortable recovery, and you'll be in my prayers tonight. Best of luck to you and your family in dealing with this situation, and I hope you'll lead a full, happy and relatively pain-free life, whether or not you ever again play football.

Obviously the league will go on, but it won't feel the same without Manning. Any one who has respect for the game should realize the significance of this loss. Here's to hoping for a speedy recovery and to see him back on the field as soon as possible! All joking aside, Peyton is a great guy and I'd hate to see him sit out.

Out of curiosity do we know which discs he is having fused? It could give some insight on how bad this will actually be.

People are overreacting to the news that Manning is out for an extended period of time. Sure the offense might drop off a little but Collins is better than a lot of starters in this league. He's also surrounded by A LOT of offensive talent.

The Colts performance is not going to be determined by the offense but the defense. They'll win more than 4 games.

I like Manning, respect him, and feared him.
Wouldn't take him over our guy, but he brought it, every time, made every game an event. Beating the Colts meant beating him, always more special because he is such a great player, who hates to lose so much, he doesn't bother trying to hide it, or fake it.
Beating him meant something. Not another day at the office.

Gonna miss him.
I miss him already, actually.
NFL is weaker without that man, hope he is able to overcome the odds and return.

I'm devastated by this news. I wish Peyton a speedy recovery. I know the Texans couldn't care less about Peyton being out. Even if the Texans do take the AFC south (which they should). Can you imagine everyone saying 'The only reason they won the division was due to Peyton's injury'? It wouldn't be real IMO.

He is most probably out for the year, and the Colts know it but will try their best not to let the news get out, because it will hurt business.

Yup. Colts fans must be berserk because of the way their braindamaged owner has been playing them on twitter. Just today he stated in response to the surgery rumors that Peyton had not had surgery on Sunday... Then this news breaks this afternoon...

All I know is I posted Will Carroll's piece on the other thread where he claimed the fusion procedure wouldn't even be considered for Manning because it would not do a damn thing for nerve regeneration and it was a career ender for a football player.

They won't IR him, what would they gain - some stiff replacing him at 53 on the roster? They're just praying that Manning rewrites the medical journals on playing with a fused C7 disc...

I can't remember if I saw it here or somewhere else but there was a descriptive breakdown of Manning's new contract including numbers associated with a career ending injury. Does anyone remember seeing that?

The thing I can't fathom is with hundreds of millions of dollars, why on earth do you require a specific set of doctors to rehab? (his lockout excuse). Why not just buy a freaking hospital full of doctors and specialists to work only with you.
Cuz that would cost him money, and not the team. ;)

Well, this news is hardly shocking. But I have to say, I'm a little confused. As I mentioned in another thread, my husband had an anterior cervical fusion on vertebrae C5 and C6 and his doctor said he could do anything he wanted after the surgery "even play professional football" (obviously, that was not a serious option, but I think he was making a point). Now, I don't know what Peyton's initial injury was and how it differs from my husband's but I would hesitate on saying it is career ending, just from my own personal experience with this surgery. But then I read what other doctors are saying, and frankly, it makes sense too.

I don't know, I just hope Peyton gets well and for god's sake DO NOT play this year!

I want Manning back for the pats colts game..i got 2nd row behind pats bench seats..i want them at full force

Outside of Wayne and Clark, do they any offensive talent?

The line sucks, the RBs are mediocre and the receivers outside the two above are maybe not even mediocre without Manning.

I don't know. Collins is 39 years old. Hasn't started for more than 9 games in a season since 2008 and that was the only time that he has started in more than 9 games in a season since 2005. He is an above average back up Qb at best. I think he might be better than a handful of starters, but those starters are starters who shouldn't be starting.

They might win more than 4 games, but not much more. Maybe two or three more. The Colts' defense is built to play with a lead. They have no running game. Their offense is going to drop off quite a bit. Collins is a below average starter on a team built around the QB.

In my crystal bong...er, bowl, I see: a 6-10 record.

Oh c'mon. You don't buy in to the crap that only Manning can make these guys stars do you? Addai is a solid RB and Collie & Garcon are genuine receivers. Saturday is a rock on the line. There's plenty of decent players on the Colts.

FUN FACTOID that may only interest me:

In terms of passer rating last year (an admittedly flawed stat), Peyton Manning (91.9) was about twice as far away from Tom Brady (111.0) as he was to Kerry Collins (82.2).

Re: Probably should've drafted is replacement this year

They probably should've drafted his replacement this year. The new guy would have this season to play, and then maybe two more to learn from Manning himself as a back up. Then Manning retires and the new guy steps up like Aaron Rodgers did.

They should trade us for Ryan Mallet this year and make him the heir.

I'd do it for their 2012 2nd round pick right now.

FWIW, Chris Mortensen earlier today mentioned that in some cases, the surgery can actually be a career saver.

His prediction: "most likely" Manning will NOT play for the Colts this season, but it won't be career-ending.

Heck, for their first, I'd consider giving 'em Brian Hoyer. :)

Full recovery will also depend on you having a strong, positive attitude, setting small, realistic goals for improvement, and working steadily to accomplish each goal.

that is an excerpt from a page on anterior cervical fusion...what is a realistic goal, to play 4 quarters of the most brutal game played by man??

I take the money and run...what the hell is Peyton trying to chase down, a second Super Bowl win? Not with THAT team anytime soon....he's going to play until he's 37 or 38 for another realistic shot? I hope Archie has some kind of influence in his decision going forward...
