Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had further neck surgery Thursday, sources familiar with the situation said.

Manning decided to have the surgery, the sources said, after consultation with a half-dozen doctors who reached a consensus that the most viable option would be a one-level cervical neck fusion in the wake of his May 23 surgery to repair a bulging disk. It's unclear whether Manning would be able to return to play this season.

Could the Colts compete for the first overall pick if Manning is out for any extended period of time?

Has this been verified yet? Isn't this the third unverified report this week that Manning has had another surgery?

It seems like this was the direction it was heading, but it would be nice to have a story corroborated by an official source.

Had cervical fusion surgery. Out a minimum of 2-3 months.

In many cases, this has been a career-ending surgery.

I hate to see any athlete hurt, and I think Manning's injury is alot more serious than first thought. As much as I dislike to say it, I will miss him this year if he stays out. The rivalry and excitment won't be the same.

I don't wish injury on anyone, including Peyton, but now let's see what that franchise is made of. When Brady missed an entire season the Patriots still managed an 11-5 record. Let's see if the Colts can even come within earshot of that. I highly doubt it.
