I just heard on NFL Live about how the Dolphins bought sound clips off someone and they used these, along with game film to figure out Brady's signals for pass protection.

John Clayton just confirmed it (an excellent source of info.)

Sorry if this has already been posted , but i didn't see anything about it

    This is bull****.
    That is cheating.

No wonder they demolished our line and beat up on Brady.

This is one game that i'm glad i missed.

I don't know how that is cheating? We can hear Brady yelling out the calls at the LOS on TV. They could TIVO it and get the same result. I do suggest they rename their protections this week.

Sure never happened when Charlie was the OC. Patriots did the same thing to Manning for a long time.

I can't really say this is cheating either. Perhaps what needs to be done is no microphones near enough to pick up the sounds of the QB's voice. If it is being reported, then Miami looks like it got a cheap win.

I dont see how you can blame the Dolphins for that, thats the Pats fault for making the o-line adjustments so obvious! I'm suprised they were the first to exploit it ,if its that bad.(Hard to argue against that after Sunday).

Word is that they used a video with sound to "steal" Zach Thomas's blitz calls...

Well I guess we now know why BB doesn't let his players get "mic'ed up" very often, if ever. Thanks.

    My Jersey:

I think it was in 2001 when the Raiders went into Indy and deciphered Manning's audibles *during the game*. MLB Greg Biekert was the culprit. After halftime, the Raiders defense completely shut down the Colts and the Raiders won going away.

In the Raiders/Tampa Super Bowl, Raiders coach Callahan kept the same audibles that Gruden has used the year prior. Gruden's Tampa defense knew exactly what Rich Gannon was doing as the Raiders stunk up the joint.

It was our own Willie McGinest who recognized Peyton's hand-waving meant Edge was getting the ball on 4th down in "The Stop" in that critical game in 2003.

You want to call this cheating? Fine, whatever. It's not new and it's going to continue. It won't be long before someone starts monitoring the QB helmet radio communication and relays the info to the D. The key is to always be ahead of the game. Fake 'em out. Heck, Peyton even did this in the 2004 opener by doing the same hand-wave on 3rd and short, causing McGinest to chase Edge into the line as Manning faked the handoff and ran the naked bootleg for 20 yards right where McGinest vacated. Imagine what the Pats could have done if they suspected Miami stole their audibles? They could have taken them for a ride. I consider what Miami did (and making it public) a favor to the Pats because from now on the Pats won't be so stupid to continue with the same audible system, waiting to be taken advantage of by a playoff opponent.

    Regards,
    Chris

Evidently it is considered "cheating" if you purchase the audio, whatever that means. Versus figuring it out from what you can see on TV. That's what Salisbury said and that ex DB who's on ESPNews. They would know better than me I guess.

The Commissioner has the authority under the "Unfair Acts" section to investigate anything "outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football". He can penalize a team or even reverse the win.

I remember a tampa game this year where rich gannon did the broadcast..he was calling plays before they were happening because gruden was still using some audibles from before...

Yeah, you know damn right that if Belichick had the oppertunity to do this, he would be all over it. What coach isn't looking to get an edge? Every single coach in football would do this if he could. Just Saban doing his job.

Figuring out signals from available game film is one thing; purchasing audio from a third party is another matter entirely. While it may not be cheating (I'm not sure it's not), it's definitely shady. It's not like Jason Taylor needs any help in tormenting us. This actually feeds into my belief that Saban is a slightly-above-average pro coach at best.

However, I agree with the poster who said that Miami did the Pats a favor by doing it before someone else figured it out in the playoffs.

Saban said they got the audio off of TV broadcasts. And even if they bought a video of the broadcasts to study game film, isnt that just good preperation? How is that shady? And how does that "feed into your belief" that Saban is a slightly-above-average pro coach? He figured out that you guys wernt changing your signals, got ahold of them, and then exploited you. Why again isnt that a sign of being a good coach?

I sat in the second row behind the fifty in the first Patriots/Dolphins game. Brady barks so loud, I could have taped him that game from my seat.

Damn, I missed a sale to the Dolphins.

Somehow I doubt that or his players wouldn't have made such a big deal about it.

My reaction was that it was fine. After listening to Shaun Salisbury and (forgot his first name) Allen the ex DB of the Raiders on ESPNews, evidently it's kind of below the belt. Not actually illegal but not supposed to be done - kind of like batters looking back to see where the catcher sets up or stealing signs in baseball.

So . . . well done to Saban for legally hitting below the belt. Too bad for him they didn't wait until next year as they're out of it this year.

The problem Shaun ImAMoronbury and Allen had with it is that they "paid" for the audio clip. Salisbury said he didnt have a problem with it if they got it from the TV or something... just if they paid for it. I dont see the difference... its research and preperation...

As I have said, my reaction was the same as yours. But they played in the NFL. I didn't and I assume you didn't. It's the same with stealing signs in baseball. It's legal but frowned upon. What's the difference between that and prepatation ? Just a gentleman's agreement on how the game is supposed to be played, I guess.
