Meriweather a corner??

See, Felger thinks they were still rollin' from the night before, which if true wouldn't really matter. Thing is Cooper & Meriweather were up at 6am because they were supposed to attend a team workout. Felger might want to learn all the facts before he goes spouting off.

You'd then be asking a leopard to change his spots. Over a period of time (which has seemed excruciatingly long), Felger has shown no ability, let alone inclination, to do such a thing.

But for him, boy, it's nice work if you can get it!

The line between safeties and corners is getting more and more blurred. You are getting a lot of safeties who have the quickness and coverage skills to play corner, and it seems that the big, linebacker type safeties are becoming more obselete.

If we are having this much trouble figuring out where AThomas, Vrabel, Wilson and Meriweather will be playing, ya think opposing quarterbacks might have a few difficulties figuring it out as well? If everyone can stay healthy, pre-snap reads are going to be less than helpful. I think you will see lots of movement and covert formations before the snap. Are they blitzing? Who is blitzing? Are they in a zone? Who is the safety? If disguised well enough, the entire offense will be guessing.

As for linebacker and corner/safety acquisitions next year, look for this trend to continue. To get a 4-6 year commitment (FA or high draft pick), you better be able to blitz, cover and adjust to multiple responsibilities on the fly. The NFL is a quarterback/passing league. Nickelbacks are almost considered starters and "2-down" run stuffers have become specialist (short yardage/goal line).

We all seem to be anxious to put players in neat little boxes (LOLB, SILB, WILB, ROLB, SS, FS, LCB, RCB) that define their strengths and responsibilities, but who says it has to be that way? In fact, these very specific designations only serve to help the opposing offense. Hard to identify if the SS is in the box if you don't know who that is...or even if there is someone doing that "job" on the field.

I think Meriweather is going to be a fine addition. If his mental abilities can match his physical tools, this defensive scheme (and the other skilled players executing it) could make him a weapon.

It appears that Sanders will eventually be the SS and Merriweather will be the FS.

Were getting close.
I've said this before when we got Thomas.

New England really doesn't play their safeties like conventional safties.
The Free Safety is nothing more than a 3rd Cornerback
The Strong Safety is nothin more than a Middle Linebacker with coverage responsibilities.

By design this gives us flexibility to cover run and pass without having to change personell.

Here is our Defense

Defensive Lineman - 3 - responsible to netralize the 5 OL
Outside LB - 2 - Protect against outside run & Pass Rush
Middle LB - 1 - Brushi - Protect against inside run
Cover LB - 2 - Thomas, Harrison - Protect against run at the hash marks - and drop into coverage to cover RB and TEs
Outside Corners -2- Protect against Passes on the SL
Middle Corner - FS - Protect against Deep Passes.

Merriwether Fits one of he Corner positions. Certainly not big enough to fit one of the LB positions

i think with the position flexibility we have with him, AD and wilson, you're going to see guys lining up all over the place pretty frequently next season.

...and that can be particularly useful against a team running the "no-huddle".

What, are you nuts? He wouldn't have anything to say. Having facts severely restricts your ranting options, you know that.

Nice analysis.

Meriweather is our future starting FS. I expect him to get some playing time at nickelback.

Unfortunately this is the first post i read.

But He will do both for year one.

I already love this guy and he hasn't even played a sanp as a Patriot. Im just so excited!!!

Really i dont think we can tell.;)

You should have seen me when we picked him. I was jumping up and down and bouncing off the walls. It was great.

So it was YOU at the draft party screaming like Howard Dean.:D

A team member of Brandon Meriweather was shot in the back of the head when he turned his back on some nutjob. When you have a license to carry you carry all the time. I do.

BB or Pilo already said they'll use him at Safety primarily but he'll see some time in slot covering WRs
