Re: Media speculation: Cassel draws interest

To me, the Cassel situation is the most intriguing for the time being. Opinions range from a 2nd (or two 2nd's), while others will go as far as to suggest a first rounder AND something (usually people seem to suggest a third).

To me, the Patriots have a chance to rebuild bigtime in the same way that they did in 2003 when they picked up Samuel, Koppen, E. Wilson, Warren... and set themselves up for back to back trophies.

Time will tell if we're even close to that in this year's draft. It just seems that with the extra 2nd in hand AND potential extras for Cassel there is so much more margin for error - surely even a 50% hit rate would be more than enough to get us back in the game.

yeah i say stack the defense. hopefully they can get at least a first rounder for cassel. i'd even trade one of the second rounders for a first rounder the following year.

Given the WEAK crop of QB's in this draft, it bodes well and makes sense for a team to spend even a high pick for a proven QB like Cassel

Its an interesting time for us to be in this position. I would like as much as anyone else to see the patriots get a couple draft picks in return for Cassel but don't you think its like playing russian roulette? With complications and infections that happened post surgery(s) on Brady's knee no one can be sure that he will be close to 100% for the first game. That leaves us with Kevin O'connell as our back up. Its not like the situations where Brady and Cassel stepped into play after being in the system for multiple years. O'connel has great up side but will still only be a second year player should Brady not be ready. Is this gamble worth taking or would we be better off taking the cap hit this year and then play around next year once the dust has settled. Cassel is a proven commidity now and that won't change by this time next year.

Re: Media speculation: Cassel draws interest

Devoting the salary cap space necessary to keep Cassel would be wasteful and limiting. Sure it would be nice to have him around but it isn't reasonable. If he had one more year left on his rookie deal then there would be a valid question whether he was worth more as a back-up or a trading chip. The fact that he is due big money seems to eliminate the option of keeping him.

And don't worry about Brady. He got injured in the first week of the season and has plenty of time to recover even after the infection. Had he been injured in the playoffs and then had an infection this would be a huge concern, but instead he had the infection taken care of while the season was still ongoing. And the infection is the only complication we know about.

It's just repeating what was in the Herald today. Speculation and nothing more.

You may want to add a question mark and a (rumor) to your title

This is not a breaking story

Re: Media speculation: Cassel draws interest

Some on this board would say it's Russian roulette to stick with our current D. I like Matt, but his value might never be higher and I'd rather go with K.O'C with new, faster faces on D than Matt and a limited supporting cast (due to cap considerations). Obviously, I think Brady will be back as well so I'm less in the "we can't risk losing Cassel camp".

Re: Media speculation: Cassel draws interest [merged]

Let me get this straight. The Boston Herald is "speculating" that Cassel is is "drawing interest"?

I'm all for more accurate reporting from the Herald following Tomase's WalshGate - but I don't think there's really a need to label the fact that teams have "interest" in Cassel as "speculation".

Talk about a paper that goes from one extreme to another...

One day expect the headline "Brady appears to be good". ;)

Re: Media speculation: Cassel draws interest [merged]

Miller doesn't seem to know what he's talking about in that interview (that's the best the Herald could find to "speculate"?)

He says that Cassel is better than the top QBs in the draft, who are rumored to go in the Top Ten though he (correctly) doesn't think they will... and then goes on to say that Cassel, who he obviously views as a better option than the rookies - and further compares him to Matt Ryan, who went at #3 (the same pick the Chiefs have) will only garner a 2nd round pick?

    That makes no sense.

    Cassel...to the Vikings?

Access Vikings: Blog Archive Favre, Vikings talk continues

it starts about brett favre scenarios and the viking, but mentions growing speculation that the vikes are going to make a serious push for cassel

maybe a 1st and a 3rd this year or a 1st this year and a 2nd next year or maybe their 1st and chad greenway?

    Re: cassel......to the vikings?

Who's Chad Greenway? (Forgive my ignorance, don't really pay attention to the Purple-Dudes unless they're on a primetime game).

1st and 3rd sounds good, but an extra second next year might be better investment. We can still only have 53 on the roster.

    Re: cassel......to the vikings?

I like what we would be getting in the trade, imagine us getting Tom back and get 2 ist round picks 2 second round picks and 3 3rd round picks (one compensatory for samuel), I know i'm just dreaming right now, but we could draft an entirely new defense :D
