Mike Lynch, who is pretty well connected because of Patriots All Access, said on his sports report tonight that if the Patriots offer is within $400-500,000 of what he is hearing on the open market, he would be inclined to re-sign here. That of course sounds like a guy who wants to test the market and negotiate with his preferred team from that basis. Of course it does leave the door open that if someone vastly overpays for his presence and leadership, he isn't going to just resign here anyway for old time sake. Part of the tradeoff for having employees accept the business end of the game rationally is accepting that works both ways.
