I know it's been just 2 games but McCourty is a huge upgrade at S and so far i'm liking Dennard and Talib playing more agressive press man.

I expect this to be the final lineup barring injuries and i think that trio has gone from being a weakness to solid though i'm not crowning thier asses yet. I'm still not sold on Gregory - i think his tackling stinks but he seems to do a decent enough of a job in coverage - Wilson is a rookie and he has been prone to mental errors.

Chung i thought had a good game coming back and playing in a more limited role and so did Arrington. They are capable but just not as starters.

Any thoughts on the secondary moving forward?

That's the lineup I was hoping for when the Talib deal was made and it seems to be working great thus far. Also with Arrington moved inside, he suddenly looks like a solid contibutor over there. I had lost hope in Chung but you are right he looked good in a limited role. Despite Gregory's big game I'm still not sold on him as a full time safety so hopefully Chung/Gregory/Tavon can combine to man the other safety position. With the front 7 capabilities, having a solid secondary can push this defense from liability to a strength which would make this team very difficult to beat.

I like this answer, but it seemed as though Arrington was playing with a "purpose" last night.. he seemed very agressive and on the ball.

Saw Chung in there once and a while also, so there are many combinations..

Was Talib even in the game last night? - rhetoric question.... but he was barely noticeable.

    My observations:

Chung has zero confidence or swagger. Sees the writing on the wall.
Arrington plays the slot because he can deliver hits like the one he laid on Gates, and because of his run support.
Gregory is playing with confidence and swagger.
    Talib has elevated everyone's game.
Dennard looks like a bad mo-fo. 'You ain't catching anything on my side' type attitude.
Tavon Wilson is a liability in coverage.

I think Dennard and Mccourty have locked their starting spots up for next year, barring any regression in play. Talib staying will depend on his play and what he would want in FA.

For this season, the other safety spot should go to Gregory. Hopefully for 2013 one of Wilson/Ebner really progresses in the offseason to overtake that spot; Chung can have fun on another team.

No disrespect intended, but Sanchez is awful, and the Jets receiving corps looks like something from the Arena League. Hill, Kerley, and Gates are not making any defensive secondary coach think they are facing a trio of bonafide NFL weapons. they just are not very good. If they can keep Shaub and Johnson in the building in two weeks, I will think we've turned the corner. Until then, I will reserve judgement.

That's better than cursing his name in vain like we did kyle arrington.

Like with the OL, if you don't hear a CBs name that tends to mean he's doing a good job.

I think that's a fair comment. Just bear in mind that in previous games we've made Sanchez look better than he is. We've let other offenses with similar talent look great. The fact that our defense is holding back anyone at this point is an improvement.

I will grant you there is reason for optimism, but last night's fiasco has more to do with the hapless state of the Jets than the sudden appearance of a dominant D in Foxboro. I will also say that games like last night get teams playing with some confidence. Let's see how they fare vs. Houston and San Fran.

Definitely fair to reserve judgement on this defense turning the corner, and I agree actually it is very early. But I will say there is definitely evidence of improvement the last 2 weeks, because this same offense gave us fits in the first meeting. Other bottom half of the league starters like Fitzpatrick, Russel Wilson, Matt Moore, Rex Grossman, have looked like elite QB's against this D the last couple seasons. So I believe the defense last night deserves a good amount of credit despite playing a poor team/QB.

to be honest, while better offenses, its not like Alex smith/schaub are "elite" quarterbacks coming up...

still, from the eye test this defense has played better/more aggressive the past 2 weeks....there has been better coverage according to my eyes.

It's looking good so far. Let's see how they do against Houston.

I guess you missed him cause the incompletion on the would be touchdown that was ruled incomplete challenged by Rex and stood as called?

Another slant route that could have been covered better by Talib but great individual effort by Talib to make up for poor positioning by getting his hand in there to just knock it lose enough that the receiver needed to trap it on the ground to catch it.
