The New York Times is confirming what we already knew...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/us/politics/02vetting.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

Up until midweek last week, some 48 to 72 hours before Mr. McCain introduced Ms. Palin at a Friday rally in Dayton, Ohio, Mr. McCain was still holding out the hope that he could choose a good friend, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, a Republican close to the campaign said. Mr. McCain had also been interested in another favorite, former Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania.

But both men favor abortion rights, anathema to the Christian conservatives who make up a crucial base of the Republican Party. As word leaked out that Mr. McCain was seriously considering the men, the campaign was bombarded by outrage from influential conservatives who predicted an explosive floor fight at the convention and vowed rejection of Mr. Ridge or Mr. Lieberman by the delegates.

And I doubt Biden was Obama's favorite choice - you do what you have to do and that includes picking a partner that your party approves of. That largely disqualifies pro choice candidates, and rightly so.

Obama had debated Biden over 10 times and they got along well in the Senate. I have not seen anything to suggest that Obama did not get to choose who he really wanted.

If this is true.....it ammounts to political suicide over the simplest form of freedom we have.

Its the very fabric of the conservative movement and it IS what has won them elections, and will lose them this one.

    ABORTION

Conservatives have been running on the "Less government running my life" platform for years. Abortion is a wedge issue they have created by pandering to the christian conservatives for votes. This goes against their philosophy of a less intrusive government. This issue has given the conservatives Palin, this issue has divided a party....

a pro-life stance goes against the core republican value of a less iuntrusive government. It iself is a policy contradiction. A lot like Pro-life, Pro-War....soon people begin to scratch their heads and not know what they stand for anymore.....

    Great job.

I haven't either but I bet most candidates, including Obama, don't get their absolute #1 choice. It's not just about them. Regardless, Lieberman was a non starter whether McCain wanted him or not.

Lieberman is/was informally on record as turning up the job due to his friendship with McCain. Lieberman knew(knows) how much problems his selction would cause in the party. Lieberman acknowledged that it would be a good thing for the voters but not so much for the party so he backed out.

The other thing is as much as Lieberman and McCain might have wanted to get together some close advisors were gently trying to tell them that two old men might not be such a good thing trying to impress voters.

I would have been fine with Lieberman even though he is pro choice.

It depends on whose vantage point you look at it from. More government running a woman's life not letting her get an abortion is one way. The other way is the baby's viewpoint of the government getting in the way allowing him to be ripped apart in the womb.

Republicans love her - independents, we'll see over the next couple of months. However, her daughter's pregnancy and the fanciful threads of fabrication we've seen around here won't be the determining factors.

Wishful thinking. McCain has lost momentum. I wonder why? Could it be because every day we are talking about something unattractive in Palin's resume?

It's just made up stuff. The most real thing is the daughter's pregnancy which isn't exactly relevant. The rest is nothing.

Honestly who in the McCain camp do you really think is speaking to the NY Times???????

Nobody of course, they are just making this stuff up.

The Times has 3 FRONT PAGES STORIES TODAY ABOUT PALIN'S DAUGHTER, THREE!!!

Liberman would have been a horrible choice for many reasons, the #1 would be that it would have eliminate a solid Pro-McCain vote in the Senate.

youy really can't see the irony of past stances on false issues concerning Obama's background...huh?

Its all just blowing in the wind with you, huh?

seriously....everyday....it gets funnier to listen to you conservative backers. The Obama speech at Invesco (all rights reserved) seems to be the white flag tipping moment for you all.

The Palin pick has been making the left act more whacky every day. The stuff you guys are posting does appear self-delusional. But that's OK, keep it up, you're turning more and more people off and driving them towards McCain/Palin.

    HA!.....frickin perfect!

Honestly....the right's constant defense sounds like an alcoholic in denial! Its funny to me to watch you foolios attempt to convince self that she is the golden child.

I think I speak for every hater of this failed neoconservative experiment when I say:

"THANK YOU FOR NOMINATING JOHN MCCAIN!!!!"

    I love you all.
