Pretty incredible when you think about it. The NFL "record" (they don't keep official records on tackles) is 214 by Hardy Nickerson in 1993. If the Pats play more teams that run inside (which their opponents do) and teams that utilize the interior passing game (which their opponents do) it wouldn't be impossible for Mayo to realize this. Amazing what happens when he gets his Mike and is healthy.

Even more important is the consistent improvement in the run defense.
After a strong game against a good running team last week, they pretty much totally shut down any running game the Chargers tried to mount.

I've never been real big on tackles stats, because there is no accounting for quality. Getting run at and abused and making 10 tackles after 80 yards of gains, is the same stat as making 10 after 20 yards of gains.

Absolutely, and I agree on that thought on tackles as a stat. However, in the context of how the team has played against the run it is fairly indicative of how well he has played. They're clearly channeling the run to the inside linebackers and leaving them with a pretty significant responsibility to engage the guards without 75 in front of them. It is pretty impressive what the inside backers have done this year.

Yes, my comments on the value of tackle stats weren't intended to mean Mayo's stats are belittled. The way we have played the run the last 2 weeks makes the numbers even more impressive.

The run defense has rapidly improved over the past few weeks. The Chargers ran for 38 yards on 19 carries today. And Mayo also had a fumble recovery after TBC somehow dove and missed the ball entirely.

This is why they moved G. Warren to the middle. You saw what the Chargers did today in response to this.

Mayo leads the entire NFL in tackles (72) right now.

I remember someone interviewing Belichick on what type of defense he prefers. He just said; "Get the guy with the ball." I think that describes Mayo. Just make the tackle. And, he does. A lot bigger challenge next week against Adrian Peterson.

He's much much better this year... he's making lots of tackles and he's making them where they matter, not 10 yards deep.

My wife and I still joke about that interview. Instant classic. "Sooner or later you have to get the guy with the ball. If you get the guy sooner, it is usually a better play than if you get the guy later."

I am really happy to see Mayo back to form, and the fumble recovery was cool too.

On the flipside, Fletcher is looking better than Guyton as time goes on...

Phenomenal stat. Mayo is on his way to joining Willis and Ray Lewis as the elite inside linebackers in the league.

14 tackles while holding Peterson to 25-92 and stoning them more than once in short yardage. I still think Mayo stopped him short of the TD even if it wasn't incontrivertable.

That play were he strafed the line and cut through and had a huge 3rd down solo tackle on AP was epic. He buckled AP with no assist...... i spilled my beer.

I confess I was one of the people worried about his regression after last year's injury. I am no longer worried. He's playing *much* better than even his rookie year, indeed he's playing as well as any ILB in the league. He's always had superior speed and agility, this year he's added very physical play and great decisiveness. He's far and away the best open field tackler on the team. He's now playing at an elite level, and he's still improving.

I think it's clear he never recovered from that injury last year which was the reason for the disappointing season. He's playing like the DPOTY this season. Couldn't be happier with his production thus far.
