Wow. The Falcons have the game against the Pats two years ago to thank for that!

I personally think he's a flash in the pan and not a legitimate stud.

Shaub is a good QB. I've thought for the past two years the Dirty birds would have been smart to kick Ron Mexico to the curb, and start Shaub.

Irrelevant to us, but interesting with the draft 38 days away (not that I'm counting or anything). Obviously that eliminates one of the possible "trade up for a QB" teams generally lowering the trade value of the top few picks by a little bit.

Good for him. He deserves a start, although after spending some time behind Houston's O Line he might reflect that it is a good idea to be careful what you wish for.

From a Pats point of view, it removes one more obstacle from Brady Quinn becoming a divisional rival.

Good move by the Texans. They get their starter without giving up a first round pick, after that proposed Jake Plummer thing fell through. Theyre finally moving in the right direction, and it makes the AFC South start to look tougher. Anyone's better than that stiff Carr.

What does this mean for the draft?

Carr is on the way out. Who are suitors?
    - Raiders - Vikings - Dolphins - Cleveland - Lions - ?

All of these teams have top 10 picks and would be interested in a QB like Quinn or Russell. For the Raiders, this might force their hand to trade Moss, pick up Carr and pick Calvin Johnson. I think that the trade of Randy Moss might be more easily done IF there are three teams involved... say

    Moss to Green Bay
    Carr to Oakland
GB's 2nd round pick and an Oakland 4th round pick

Don't know if that works on the value chart, but just throwing it out there.

What we know it does mean is Atlanta is now in a better position to move into the late 1st for a "need" player, and there is one team with late first picks who is now looking at the draft for reserve/youth/developmental players instead of immediate impact players.

Who are the run & gun Vick-like QBs in this draft? Whichever offensive system Petrino wants to put in for Vick, he's now in the market for a mobile QB to develop behind him.

They have DJ Shockley behind him and they like him. I think they'll likely sign a veteran to a short term deal to play for the #2 spot. Their needs lay more in O-line and D-line/LBs.

    Re: Shaub traded to Texans

I think this is a GREAT deal for Atlanta - They got great value for a guy, who despite that great game against the Pats, doesn't have a .500 completion rate, or an NFL win to his credit. Also that #2 isn't a Patriot #2, its a pick in the 30's, in an area where the talent level of the players isn't going to be much different than the talent level the Pats are dealing with at 24 and 28.

As far as it concerns the Pats... The good news is, it give the Pats a possible trading partner if they want to move down at 28, providing Atlanta sees someone THEY want at that spot. It is possible, since they play such different offensive and defensive systems, that they are looking for different types of players. Getting a chance for a DE like Moss might make it worth it to them, while Moss isn't probably a target of the Pats.

The bad news is, it gives Atlanta capital to move UP in the draft to get AHEAD of the Pats IF their first priority is a safety. I think thats the only area where Atlanta and the Pats might be in competition of players

As for Carr. I think Oakland would be a great stop for him. That way Davis could draft Johnson and have a QB ready to give him the ball. Forget AAron Rogers. Most of Carr's problems were not of his own making. Charlie Casserly is a much better analyst, than he was a GM.

Yes, Path To The Draft had them on the clock and noted they will need some good OL who can "dance" with Vick in the pocket, and a DE. With Plummer retiring and Garcia in Tampa the only veteran QB with wheels off the top of my head is Aaron Brooks, hardly a good role model or teacher I'd think. Petrino being fresh from his run & gun gang in Louisville would seem (to me) more likely to look for a rookie he can develop "his" way behind the veteran Vick.

I'm not convinced the Pats and Atlanta will be in competition for S in round one, but I do like the trade potential if a Spencer is there with deep pocket (picks) teams Atlanta, Tennessee, and Detroit all craving a pass rushing DE. Not to mention the Pats old trading partner Baltimore looking for a DE/OLB. The Pats holding two picks makes them the number one trading target.

I read on KFFL that the trade involved a swap of 1st round picks too and that the addition pick to Atlanta was a 2nd rounder of 2008. So Atlanta has #8 pick now and Houston has #10, I believe. I think Atlanta will still go for Landry at 8, who knows?

#2 this year, #2 next year and Atlanta flip flopping #1s from #10 overall to #8 overall.

    Nice haul . . .

Yeah, I saw that. Wow, the Falcons made a great deal here! I think the Falcons may go for Jamaal Anderson. They have no decent replacement for Pat Kerney.

I personally think that Landry is a reach at #8. Reggie Nelson is the best safety in this draft IMO.

espn.com agrees that there is an agreement in principal, pending resigning Schaub, and it may be completed this PM. Atlanta gives: Schaub + #10
Houston gives #8, plus their 2nd round picks this year and next.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2807051

Also speculates that Falcons might go after Wright of Cincinatti.

texans gave up way too much

shaub is 25? and carr is 26.....car has 5 years starting exper. while shaub, looks like he has a whole lot of promise doenst have as much as carr, obviously,

but then again, shaub looked really good throwing the ball to crumpler......white and jenkins.....so...he looked goo throwing it to crumpler....with johnson, he'll probably become the new face of the texans...which isnt a great senario for the pats, if the lions and browns pass up on quinn...he could fall to #9

on that note, anderson would be a great pickup here, knowing that they have the texans' and their own 2nd round picks to use as bargaining to trade into the 1st round and draft a safety like nelson ahead of the pat's....as some of you stated before

I would be happy to trade them the 24, or 28 for their 40 +42. Nelson isn't a fit for the Pats D anyway...

He's not going to do any better than Carr did behind that line. I don't understand why people are so quick to blame Carr for the Texans woes, he's a fine young quarterback, the problem is he doesn't have an offensive line or running back. I bet Brady wouldn't do much better than the 82.1 rating Carr posted with that crew.

Just thinking out loud. Going from an 10 to a 8 is 100 pts. Pick 40 is 500. 2nd round pick next year is probably worth somewhere between 350-500. Basically Atlanta just got about the equivalent of the 16th pick of this years draft for their backup QB (who'll be a free agent at the end of next year as well). Do you think that they could have gotten that much for Vick?

Nelson is a great fit for any D. I may have a man-crush on him, but IMO he's the best free safety to come into the NFL since Ed Reed.

This is an absolute stael for the Falcons..

First off moving from 10 to 8 and then two #2s

Houston is paying for Schaub, what they would have to pay to get to the tenth pick in the draft!!! (according to the trade value chart).

Plus moving to #8 is a great spot for Atlanta. If Quin drops to #8, they can entertain offers from everyone who wants to jump Miami at #9 to get him.
