I got this idea from a post in another thread and it interested me. I think it could help answer a couple of questions in one fell swoop. For the 7(?) pick, some folks see a T upgrade, others hope for Gholston. Or in some capacity in this draft, OL/LB rush can be obtained/upgraded. Etc, etc, you've prolly read it all and get my gist.

I'm simply curious about how people feel about NE vs. whoever, if Gholston is lined up against Matt Light all game. What is your opinion of what happens?

If he's not a Patriot, then Matt Light pancakes him every time. :D

    #50 Jersey

Light's done alright against Merriman the last 3 times, I'm really not worried about him facing Gholston if the Jets take him. Nor Calvin Pace for that matter.

    #12 Jersey

I take Light against anybody not named Schoebel or Taylor.

If the Pats take Gholston with the #7 and Gholston starts in the second team defense, then Light and Gholston are going to see a lot of each other on the practice field. That is worth a trip to Foxboro to watch those battles or should I say the educating of Mr. Gholston.

Early on, Light will handle him. By the second half of year 1, Gholston will figure him out. By year 2 it will be a mismatch and Light will need a rb chip.

But all it takes is one blown block. Gholston running free on Brady's blind side is not a pleasant thought.

I think your forgetting Osi Uminyora. I'm glad the Pats don't have to face that D-Line next year.

Unless Gholston is more workout warrior than football player, in which case I'd love to see him playing for the Jets (sorry, can't post links yet):

Gholston had more sacks than any other Div 1A player over the last 2 seasons. He just broke Vrabel's OSU single season sack record. I realize sacks aren't everything, and his motor runs hot cold. But to call Gholston just a workout warrior is delusional.

Light should be able to handle him in Gholston's rookie season. However, at their full potential, Gholston.

In today's game, sacks have more value on defense than anything else.

Except for INTs and fumbles and 3rd down stops and TFLs should have the same value :)

Light has trouble against super quick pass rushers like Freeney and Taylor, he just doesnt have the quickness to match them. He does a decent job against physical guys like Merriman. Gholston is not superquick hes a physical type so Light would do decent against him.

Light isnt elite no doubt and could be upgraded but its not like hes hurting the team and is a weakness. Right tackle is more of a weakness.

Wouldnt say tackle or pass rushing olb is our #1 need. We got decent tackles, and we got Adalius and Vrabel on the outside for probably a few more years, Vrabel could be upgraded no doubt but its not a pressing situation. We have -no- corners. We need a replacement for Samuel.

Funny thing is, I think Vrabel was the brightest spot on our defense last year. Now if by, "can be upgraded", you mean that he's getting up there in years, then I would be inclined to agree. But he still more than holds his own out there.

    #12 Jersey

The Pats would need to adjust and improve. No? Didn't Dallas & Minnesota put up a ton of points on that defense? It can be done.

hes decent but hes never really been dominant or anything. A lot of his sacks this year were gargabe and he never really shows up in big games against elite teams. Id take alot of OLB's over Vrabel for sure, but he does a solid enough job to stick around. We'd be better if we upgraded him but its not really a pressing need he can play a few more years. I really hope hes not planning to stay around as long as Bruschi or Seau though lol cuz then he'd be outie5000.

This post undervalues Vrabel, but does make some good points. He is a very solid player, but he is not a game breaker. His sacks generally come vs the TE, or rb, and rarely vs an OT. Teams do not scheme for Vrabel.

to be honest..i think Light would get creamed. Why? He struggles against speed guys and Gholston's first step is amazing then his strength as well. He'll run around or through Matt Light. Im not saying this because im a Gholston fan but i've seen Matt's ups & downs.
