This guy is a horrible writer, all of his articles are anti-Patriots propaganda trash to cause a stir in Pats fans and I refuse to read anything by him.

Let me guess this article is about how the Patriots didn't make the Super Bowl this year, groundbreaking.

This guy is just revolutionary. What an amazing subject he has uncovered. Not clicking - I value Tomase's opinion more than this hacks.

    Re: Massarotti:Not So super

I thought it was pretty good... the only real argument was we were peaking and building up to the playoffs, that we had the momentum. But that's a far cry from, say, beating the Steelers -- we weren't able to in the regular season, after all.

Plenty of counterarguments (i.e., we always win in the playoffs when we lose in the regular season, we had momentum, blah blah blah,) but realistically (if we can use that word to describe woulda-coulda-shoulda arguments,) the Pats exceeded expectations by going 11-5, and probably would not be playing this Sunday even had the playoff formulas been different.

Sure it's like an unnecessary icewater shower to read this in print, but who cares at this point. It's scouting time and contracts time in NE, not game time. Happens to 30 teams every year, right?

    Re: Massarotti:Not So super

Don't care for Massarotti but the article isn't all that bad. He's just saying that those who are saying the Patriots should be in the SB need to take their homer glasses off. The thing is, I didn't get the feeling that there were very many that thought that at all. There was bit of reaction when the team missed the playoffs on the tiebreaker, but a certain amount of that is to be expected - just like fans of any team yelling at the ref when a flag is thrown against their team.

This may be in part a response to the article that was in Slate by a writer for Boston Globe magazine that stated the opinion that 'The Cardinals' presence in the Super Bowl is fluky and disgraceful.' Unfortunately as a result of that piece, some around the country have jumped to the conclusion that Pats fans collectively are whining about how the season and playoffs have turned out and think the Pats should be in the SB.

And the Cardinals went 0-4 against NFC playoff teams in the regular season.

It's homer-like to believe that a team with a top 8 offense and defense that was peaking in December and had a QB getting better every week would be able to win 3 more games?

I wouldn't equate a common occurrence in every single game to something that has never happened before. (An 11-5 team missing the playoffs with a 6 team per conference format)

    Re: Massarotti:Not So super

I disagree with those who think this article is okay.

The problem with it is that its not simply an article saying the Pats dont deserve to be in the playoffs and arent a SB team.

Rather the article is about calling Pats fans idiot homers if they disagree with this point.

This article could have easily been written simply as an assessment of the team, and not as a commentary / reaction to Pats fans.

Also, I I agree with Disco, and dont understand what is wrong with a fan being upset that their team didnt make the playoffs, especially when that team was 11-5. If you are not upset at all, then you're not a fan.

Finally, its ludicrous to say that the Pats would have had no chance if they did make it. Even if you dont think they were very good, fluky things happen in single elimination tournaments. The so called and supposed "best teams" heading into the playoffs have rarely won it all over the past 10 years.

And, come on, the Patriots would have atleast been a dangerous team - -and I'm certain that Vegas odds would have considered them as such.

I hate Massaroti because he portrays himself as better than the average fan. He seems to view himself as intelligent and unbiased, while fans are supposedly blind and ignorant. That is a very smug and elitist view. Moreover, he is the one who is usually wrong, and writes useless drivel.

I went against my better judgment and clicked it, and saw this right off the bat...

He's a troll who gets paid. Disgusting.

How anyone can find the above "alright" or "decent" is beyond me.

And remember folks, if you think the Patriots could of made the Super Bowl this year you're a hallucinating demented card-carrying Belichicklet.

All anyone has to do to shut him down is ask who's representing the NFC. There's really no sense in worrying about these writers.

This guy stinks. He wrote an article hammering the Sox for not treating Tek better. They just paid him $40 mill and offered him 10 mill in arbitration, which he declined.....and this clown hammers the Sox, just like he tries to do to Pats. The Globe has really gone down hill....Thanks God for Reiss - even though he is probably too pro-Pats, he gives us information and doesn't try to get attention by writing crap just to stir the pot....

    Re: Massarotti:Not So super

If there was any hint of a sentiment in Patriots Nation that the Pats got screwed out of the playoffs AND should be playing in the Super Bowl, don't you think there would have been a thread or two on Patsfans.com?

Its a legit gripe to question a playoff system where 8 and 9 win teams can host a playoff game AND draft ahead of teams that finish 11-5, but I don't recall anyone on this board claiming that we would have been the de facto AFC champs had we gotten into the playoffs.

Massarotti's new journalistic formula is to write articles aimed at intentionally pissing off patriots fans. Congratulations Tony, you've got us talking about your piece of **** article.

We have this in Pittsburgh...his name is Mark Madden...he puts up articles against the Steelers and bashing the Rooney's just to get hits to his website cause he knows the Steelers fans will go nuts.

They all do it, we all have them, say something you know will annoy and piss off the fan base and they will ping your website making you look important to your editor.

What is all the hysteria about? What exactly do you want to read in the newspaper? Does everyone/everything have to agree with you to be 'good' writing?

Maz does not say the Pats would have had "no chance" in the playoffs - at least read what the guy is saying.

And who can deny that the most telling aspect of the Pat's season was exactly what Maz points out - the Pats couldn't win either of the key games that would have put them over the top: Colts, Jets? And that they got ripped by two teams, Pitt and SD, that we have measured ourselves against since our SB run started.

He says our D needs to be improved. Ah, I've read that hundreds of times here since the season ended. It's no secret that one defensive stand against the Colts two years ago would have sent us to another SB, one last year in the SB and Brady would have his record tying fourth SB ring, or one against the Jets this year would have sent us to the playoffs. The D has been failing at key moments for some time, this year when we couldn't count on always outscoring the opposition the D's shortcomings really stood out.

Sure, the homer/delusional/demented/etc opening is a bit over the top; so the guy's not Red Grange, big deal.

Could the Pats have succeeded in the AFC playoffs this year, you bet. Could they have beaten Pitt in Pitt? I don't know, but as Maz wrote, anything is possible the new NFL.

    ....

And the hallucinating demented card-carrying Belichicklets are those who just thought they might have had a chance.

This guy is not a good writer, his rinse and repeat gimmick goes as follows...

    1) Pick a commonly discussed Pats-related topic (Spygate, 11-5, Brady's injury, etc.)
    2) Take the direct opposite view of Pats fans to get attention.
    3) Throw in immature labels to those who oppose ("Middle aged losers in Bruschi jerseys, hallucinating, demented", etc.)
    4) Make excuses for points to the contrary (Cardinals weren't trying, We blew out Dolphins, but they beat us in week 3)

Sad excuse of a shock value writer.

Here is a letter I sent to Massarotti:

    Dear Mr. Massarotti:

Thank you for writing an article that shows the world exactly how little you actually know about football. You should really stick with baseball because you are way out of your league. You do realize that the Arizona Cardinals disproves most of the arguments you make for why Pats fans are homers if they think could have done damage in the Super Bowl. In fact, the last three Super Bowl winners disprove your arguments too because they were all supposed to be one and done playoff entrants (ok, the 2005 Steelers were given at least a glimmer of a chance at least until the Division round).

    Let's go over the facts:

    • You claim the Pats wouldn't have done anything in the playoffs because they went 2-4 against playoff teams. Well the Cards went 1-5 against playoff teams in the regular season including against two teams they faced in the playoffs. The only playoff team they beat in the regular season were the Dolphins and that was week 2 before the Dolphins caught their stride.
    • They lost to the Eagles by 28 points on Thanksgiving and beat them in the NFC Championships. That goes against your argument about the Pats getting spanked by the Steelers.
    • The Cards had a horrible defense in the regular season, but an opportunistic defense in the playoffs which has been a major factor in their wins.
    • The Cards were limping towards the end of the season and after an 8-2 start, ended the season with a 9-7 record. They blew a lot of opportunities themselves.
    • Last year's Giants were supposed to go to Tampa Wild Card weekend and get crushed, they beat up every team they faced in the playoffs including the 18-0 Patriots.
    • In the 2006 season, the statistically worst rush defense in NFL history, the Colts, were supposed to go into KC and face the league's second leading RB in Larry Johnson (had 1,789 yards that season). The Colts held Johnson to 13 carries for 32 yards that game. The Colts went on to beat the "superior" Ravens and have the greatest come back win in NFL playoff history against the Patriots in the AFC Championship game.
    • In the 2005 season, the sixth seeded Steelers went into Indy who went 13-0 to start the season and beat them. And then won the Super Bowl three weeks later.
    • A common thread between the 2008 Cards, 2007 Giants, 2006 Colts, and 2005 Steelers was that they were playing some of their worst football in late November and early December and turned it around right before or at the beginning of the playoffs. The Pats did the same.
    • The Pats are the first team in 23 years and the second team in 41 years not to get into the playoffs with 11 wins. So saying the Pats blew their chances to get into the playoffs is a little misleading since any other year, people would be saying how scrappy they were by getting 11 wins facing such adversity to get into the playoffs. The difference in the storyline of their 11 win season is a fluke season where 11 wins wasn't enough to get into the playoffs that may not happen again for another two decades.

I don't know if the Pats would have done damage in the playoffs, but saying they had no chance to is complete ignorance of the facts of the NFL these days. Come Sunday it is very possible that the streak will be at four years in a row that the Super Bowl winner is a team that everyone written off as a Wild Card weekend or at least a Division round loser. That isn't a "singular truth", my friend. That is a trend.

Please stick to the Red Sox. Leave the Patriots to someone who actually understands the game and doesn't have a thinly veiled agenda against them and their fans. I know the surged popularity of the Patriots over the last two decades have taken away some of the attention of the Red Sox and that obviously upsets you, but you can still take comfort in the fact that it is still a Red Sox town.

    Regards,

The article's main premise is to rip Patriot's Nation because "we" think "we" got screwed out of the playoffs and the Pats should be representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. I have not heard one person claim we should be in the Super Bowl.

It's a shame that the reputation thingy has dissapeared.
    GREAT rebuttal.
Sadly, it will be lost on the not too bright.
