it's amusing that there are so many hypocritical rightwingers here. MLK stood AGAINST everything you believe in.

He was an ultra pacifist, socialist, etc.

Like i said, he makes your average democrat look like Reagan.

But you love him so much.

Lets be honest here, if he wasn't assassinated and wasn't so revered by normal folks, you hypocrites would treat him like Jesse Jackson.

You ignorant fools know nothing about the man. You take one soundbite from him and claim him as your own.

I actually have to give some compliments to Wolfpack, he was caught in a gotcha and left the thread in shame when he realized he knew nothing about MLK.

The rest of you, it's just sad watching your hypocritical love of MLK get exposed.

He would tell you to shut up I think, lumping everyone in all together and presuming to know everything I/we believe in. Stop the name calling. You disgust me.

That comment wasn't meant for just you, it was meant for all the hypocrites in general.

But it's quite easy for you to answer yourself. How do you feel about socialism? Do you think the federal government should give poor people of all color a guaranteed living wage and housing? Do you believe America wages unjust wars? Do you believe it's ok to invoke God and say he'll destroy America and give all it's power and influence to another country because we're arrogant and we act as the world's policeman?

The simple fact of the matter is that a lot of people who are posting in this thread are VERY uncomfortable with these, apparently new, ideals about the man they revered.

Why don't you people address his quotes head on. MLK was very explicit. In fact, he would be considered a dangerous subversive leftist in this day. The reason why conservatives praise the man without knowing about him is because the whitewashing that's been done on the man's life, through both our school textbooks and also through media.

MLK should be rolling in his grave about how his legacy ended up becoming. America never owned up to it's own history and MLK pointed out where we went wrong. But we only want to hear the parts of MLK's life and values that we're comfortable with.

You'll never catch me putting him on pedestal my post in this thread dealt with religion, I find it ironic how many left wing "anti christian anti god liberals" adore a man who's profession was preaching the word of god and whose whole philosophy was laced with "The Bible" "Jesus" and "God" MLK never made a speech that didn't include His Christian Upbringing and his Jesus, how can Liberals so admire and so love a man who he himself so loved The Jesus And The God that the liberal athiest laughs and scoffs at, that is real hyopcrisy.

If MLK were alive and gave one of his "Jesus Speeches" today would the left wing laugh at him as they do other public figures that dare say the word "God"...........:singing:

They don't have the balls to do it to Jessie or Uncle Jeremiah so I don't think they would do it to MLK.

That's funny, i'm a leftwing christian and so was MLK. In fact, Christian Socialism was quite big in this country before the right perverted it.

Well at least that's a little more civil.

If you are going limit those worthy of admiring King to those who agree with everything he did then the list is a lot smaller than you think. Obama himslf is not a socialist and I'm not so sure King was either. He wanted everyone to be able to earn a liveable wage but did not say it had to be 100% courtesy of the government did he? He wanted people to have decent housing and believed in assistance if they couldn't afford it but does that make him a socialist? Specifcally, show me where he was a scocialist. I did not get it from that sound bite you posted.

And no I don't believe in involking God or say he'll destroy America....nor do most conservatives. Yes we've have injust wars. Next?

See, when you reply like that, it just means your purposely glossing over every MLK quote i've posted. How could you say that king WASN'T a socialist when he specifically called for America to move towards socialism and he started an organization that tried to get the federal government to guarantee full employment, guarantee a liveable wage and also low income housing? IT ALL HAPPENED:

Poor People's Campaign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Be honest about it, MLK was a radical leftist and many on the right who praise him doesn't seem to know this fact.

I never praise him, and I know he was a radical leftist, Bill Cosby is the guy who should be on the pedestal.

Granted some may not have known that but do you think that info will turn all of them into King haters? Maybe the fringe, but certainly not the majority. Taxing the rich in favor of social programs redistibutes wealth. We're doing that now, does that make us a socialist society? Did King seeing something wrong with capitalism then mean that he wanted all capitalism to end? I don't know that he did. Can Obama praise him? Because he isn't a radical socialist. Does it mean he's spiting on "everything he believed in"? Is it ok if we praise him for his peaceful mannor and vision of color blindness or do we all have to be dyed in the wool radical socialists?

Lets be honest, MOST people don't know it (even many mainstream democrats) because MLK's history was whitewashed.

And you know what? The right wouldn't mostly publicly turn on King because his memory is sacrosanct. But lets be honest here, if a popular Democrat today espoused what King did, do you believe the right wouldn't rip them apart on Fox News? This only works if you're honest with yourself.

Lets see what the poor people's movement wanted:

commitment to full employment - we don't do that now, unemployement's at what, almost 10 percent? don't tell me the right wouldn't scream socialism if the federal government guaranteed employement.

guaranteed annual income - Do we guarantee an annual income? No, we have a minimum wage, which FDR first enacted. MLK want MORE than the federal minimum wage.

low-income housing - Ok we actually do have this in the form of vouchers. I highly doubt MLK would have been satisfied though, as we have lots of homeless still. This is about the closest we have right now of MLK's ideals.

Yes: "You are messing with captains of industry… Now this means that we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong…with capitalism…There must be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a Democratic Socialism."

Boy that's confusing because Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and everyone on the right says he's a radical socialist.

You cannot extrapolate what happened in the mid sixties to what is going on today, society and all of its divides were more obvious.. unfortunately the socialist card is played again, and for those of us who heard him none of it was about socialism.. it was about civil rights, stopping the war with a touch of feminism thrown in.. the divide was so great, you cannot really label it socialism..

The world was a different place then.. so you cannot just think you know what happened by checking with Wikipedia.. IMO MLK was the greatest person on the last century, Jack Kennedy may have come close, but his tenure was too short.. MLK was making news just about daily from 1955 to 1968...

Ok lets just think about that for a second. Because MLK said capitalism wasn't working and called for socialism, but his statement was made in the 60's, it wasn't actually a statement in favor of socialism.

Let that sink in for a bit.

    Maybe re-read what King said:

This is why we can't have an honest conversation in this country. The cognitive dissonance is incredible.

You can like him, but be honest about why you like him and not ignore the totality of his value system.

And apply the same standard you did king to liberals when talking about 'welfare' and 'government handouts'.
