Different story when your employer who could potentially pay you millions of dollars has mandatory drug testing.

Former Pat RB Laurence Maroney charged with misdemeanor drug possession

Maroney charged with a misdemeanor marijuana possession (less than an ounce).

Maroney, 26, and others were arrested January 17 near Chaifetz Arena after police approached cars slowing in traffic, smelled marijuana and located weapons in one of the cars. The circuit attorney's office said an investigation determined those in possession of handguns broke no laws. Four others with Maroney that night also face a misdemeanor drug charge.

Maroney's attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said Maroney plans to plead not guilty and that it was "unfortunate he was charged under the circumstances." Rosenblum said prosecutors will have a difficult time proving Maroney is guilty of the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

What may be the most interesting aspect of this charge is how it works out with Roger Goodell's player personal conduct policy and the NFL's drug policy. Will a player such as Maroney contest Goodell's authority to impose a suspension if or when that happens considering there is no CBA and the players are locked out at the time the charges are being made?

You mean Maroney still plays in the NFL???

Judging from his minimal near non existent stats in Denver you would think he was long out of football by now :snob:

The crime happened when there was a CBA though.

Yeah, that will probably be Goodell's point - even though charges weren't filed till now. Will the fact Goodell did nothing while the CBA was still in effect matter? It will be more interesting to see what happens when a player does something and is also charged during the lockout.

If Vince Jackson gets a DUI tomorrow, does he get suspended for a year? If he does, I can almost guarantee he contests Goodell's authority to do that considering the circumstances as well as the penalty.

Isn't this old news??? January 17th...

I would think the player could be suspended if they do something during the lockout because I think the NFLPA and the NFL will agree that the new agreement will be retroactive to March 1, 2011 for the purposes of time of service, etc.... The NFL will then say any indiscretions that occurred during the lockout period are subject to league discipline.

He was just formally charged. Its a legal thing.

Its relevant because the Pats could use a RB to replace Taylor and Morris. If Lomo dances on the pot charge you never know.

I heard he can tear up a dance floor.

Agreed. Thats what Maroney is " a dude in his mid twenties" cause he is no longer an NFL football player. He had 74 yards on 36 carries last year with one lost fumble.

Poor bastard, from scoring the first touchdown in the super bowl to this.

I guess Moss isn't the only one that believes he can continue to play at a High Level.

I, for one, am shocked to discover that Kool-Aid Maroney enjoys pot.
