Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl [resolved]

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

Perhaps it is a situation where this is considered to be a 'volunteer' rather than a paid worker, and the USMC volunteers a color guard in exchange for some free publicity. Regardless, I don't see why he couldn't be offered a field pass to stand on the sidelines and watch the game from there.

This may be slighly off topic and a poor comparison, but there are plenty of other volunteers that don't get to watch the game and don't get paid a penny either. For example, there are 600 roadie volunteers who set up and break down the stages for the pre-game and halftime shows. In addition there are another 2000 volunteer 'fans' that run out to the field and surround the stage of the halftime act. They require you participate in three rehearsals that last from 4 to 10 hours, gather in a tent outside the stadium several hours before the game, and immediately leave the stadium after halftime. The stadium and the NFL make mucho $ while convincing these people to work for free in order to be 'part of the super bowl experience.'

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

IIRC each player is given two tickets but they aren't allowed to scalp them ( see Tice, M. for reference). It would be cool if a few players who aren't going to the game decided to donate them to the Color Guard....
Just my suggestion.........

I was involved in a pregame thing for the patriots probably 15 years back (Was a youth sports thing), and I sure as hell didn't get to watch the game. They shuttled us right out.

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

Maybe they should have joined the Army instead of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children?

I'd think it would be much cooler if they gave those tickets to "Make a Wish" or something like that. The Marines are being paid (by the US military) to be there.

I have been against the make-a-wish foundation ever since they denied a dying childs request to go hunting with ted nugent..........which caused ted nugent to create his own make-a-wish type of foundation

As bad as this postseason has been, the NFL might be doing them a favor.

In all seriousness though, what a load of crap. Another Goodell brainfart, what a surprise.

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

I personally do not like all the nationalism at sporting events and would really like to see it go away. But if they're going to put on a patriotic show and wave the flag and all that then kicking Marines out of the stadium before the game starts seems to be about as hypocritical as you can get.

Yea, because standing and saluting the flag and hearing the national anthem is such a horrible thing to do. How ignorant. Why get RID of all the "nationalism" at games? Heck, these games would not be going on if it weren't for a country as free as the United States. Canada does it. European countries do it. You say the pledge in schools everyday. But yet...its too much "nationalism"? Give me a break. By all means, someone waving a flag or being proud their an American...how could they?

we wouldn't have to be nationalistic if all the US-haters simply left and went to where things are 'better'

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

You guys read Florio's post right? That this is the way it has always been? Why are we getting outraged at Goodell?

that's why I reserved judgement until the facts came out..........

Because jumping on Goodell is the trendy thing to do.

How has the postseason been bad? We have a bunch of great games.

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

The NFL needs to fix this right now. I think that someone has to do something. Hey if the League doesn;t maybe one of the owners of the teams that willl play in the super bowl should invite the Marines to watch the game with them. It's because of the Armed Forces that we get to spent that Sunday watching the game.

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

If youread the original link the marine mom said they color guard has been allowed to stay at other events, the SB isn't explicitly mentioned. So the explaination that they hadn't changed the policy seems plausible. The Florio piece stating that a party is hel and that they get a tent with food ect seems OK.

I would note that those who don't approve of the Marines or other servicemen being at these events or should be treated like any other volunteer ignore the risks these people take to protect us.

Re: Marine Color Guard not allowed to stay to watch Superbowl

Looks like there is some confusion here.

If, in past SuperBowls, the Color Guard was escorted to a party tent to watch the game, then that is OK, and sounds like standard operation procedure.

If, at past SuperBowls, the Color Guard was allowed to stay in-stadium, but they changed it this year, then there is reason for outrage.

The article linked in the first post takes the latter stance, the NFL takes the former stance.

You mean, the risks these people are paid to take to protect us.

I have a friend who does tough jobs. Generally 3-400 feet underwater. He risks his life daily to repair tunnels, pipes, etc. I don't see him getting a free superbowl pass, or even a free drink at the local pub.

Thousands of different professions risk their lives daily to make life better for others. At this point, your average Marine/Army/etc is risking his life to pay for college, not for some noble reason.

Problem fixed.

ProFootballTalk.com - NFL CHANGES COURSE ON COLOR GUARD ISSUE

Looks like the NFL did an about face and is now allowing the guy/gals to stay.

I was pretty close when I posted/predicted last night,...
>>>
As soon as this gets publicity on FESPN, PFT and Peter King etc.....Goodell will come out and say something to the effect of " we have no idea how this baseless rumor got started but it was always our intent that the color guard stay and enjoy the game." ......<<<<<<

I gotta give it to Florio, he worked pretty hard on this today with the NFL.
