If that happens, Archie Manning will just buy a condo in New Jersey so that he can keep watching his boys play.

When done correctly, the words Chris Carter and think can correctly be used in the same sentence. For example; "Intelligent football fans think that Chris Carter is a douchebag." or "Whenever Chris Carter speaks, we think he is going to say something stupid." In the previous two examples, although the usage of the word think was technically correct, the word "know" would have been more appropriate.

I was waiting for someone to come out with it at some point this season. Manning to the Jets and Favre back out of retirement suggestions.

    What a week.

What? You think that, if the Colts agreed to a trade and the Jets had an opportunity to add Peyton Manning, they wouldn't do it because they don't have enough cap space? The salary cap means nothing, dude, it can be manipulated in every way to accommodate a player of Manning's caliber.

I'd love that if it happened. The Jets sacrificing part of their future to bring in a player who will be a year removed from football into a system that may or may not fit his skillset?

Plus the games would be fun as hell.

If I were them I wouldn't do it because frankly, nobody knows what Manning's caliber is these days. Seems like he hoodwinked the team he's on right now into paying him a ton of cash to establish his butt space on the bench for the year.

Manipulating the cap to accommodate a singular talent is what landed the Colts in the Suck for Luck Sweepstakes this season. And it's landed the JETS in the same position they've occupied for Woody Johnson's entire ownership...

Manning is either going to play for the Colts in 2012 or he's not going to play at all. His contract is structured to allow them to walk away if they have to, not to trade him if they feel like it...

The only way the Colts can walk away is to cut him before the new league year commences in March and take a $16M dead cap hit in 2012.

The only way they can trade him is if they don't cut him but also don't pick up his $28M option bonus. Only in that case his cap hit becomes $32M for them in 2012 or $28M for any team willing to trade for one year of him at that price after which he is a UFA.

If they pick up the option they are on the hook for $44M in potential dead cap that will only decrease by $11M per season over the remaining 4 years of the deal... So trading him before 2014 really isn't an option.

there's a lot of rumbling that manning will never play again because of the seriousness of his neck injury, so that may render the entire point moot. though id love for the jets to trade a high pick for a guy who never plays

I have absolutely no desire to see Peyton Manning in a Jets uniform, and I suspect that BB feels the same way.

The Colts are already a 1-15/0-16 team. Cap hits mean nothing. How is that cap hit going to kill an 0-16 team?

This wouldn't happen under Polian. However, if a new regime is brought in or a complete rebuild is undertaken, they would be better to gut the team and stock up on picks.

If they do draft Luck, that would be the better option because fans care about championchips and if you show some light at the end of the tunnel, they will stay.

Besides, Manning would have his own objectives in this scenario. If he does come back, what's the reason?

It would be interesting to see. So much of what Peyton does is based on timing and chemistry with his receivers, and though he's been able to work guys like Garcon, Collie, etc into the mix, he's always had guys like Wayne, previously Harrison, Clark, and the like to be his safety nets. He's also had Jeff Saturday as his center and a fairly consistent O-Line for a many of his years there.

It would be an interesting study to see how quickly he builds up that relationship with a new OL, new WR who are quite different in attitude to the ones he's used to, a different city where he's not automatically treated like a legend if he falters, AND coming off a year out of football and a neck injury. I wouldn't count him out, but if he looks remarkably average given all those circumstances, would it surprise anyone?

He will also be 35 years old in November, coming off a serious injury... not sure he will ever be the same value he used to be.

Dude, that's the reason the Colts are in such a bad place right now.

Neither team could adjust the cap sufficiently to trade Manning and still put any sort of competitive team on the field.

    Well said sir.

Though, technically, I meant Chris Carter doing the thinking. Your sentences make sense because the thinking is being performed by other individuals :D.
