like MO said he's not Brady why would the pats put the exclusive rights tag on him if some team wanted to give BB a #1 the pats would take it, but thats not going to happen cause by the time the lockout ends if it ends it will be to close to the season for any team to invest that much into any outside player cause he will not have a nuff time to pick up the play book and make a impact day one.

Mankins hasnt said that he staying. Everything is on a wait and see basis and I dont believe that NE will pay him 10M for 1 season. Id rather get a G in free agency and use the money on the defense.

There was a time when if NE scored 17 points or more they won.

Theres no guarantee that NE would get anything for him.

NE will look to free agency for defensive players. A stud OLB or DE could off set Mankins and NE would get nothing.

Its not moot because NE has left options open for Mankins to leave. All Im saying is that NE used the tag to protect their interests rather then spend 10M for a G.

There you go. I could see a stud DE being the 2nd highest paid player for the Pats, but Mankins? No

Where are you getting that Brady has 18M in new money?

There is only around 10M here Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2011 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

    10M for a G is foolish.

    Mankins isnt John Hannah.

BS. The Pats have tagged and traded in the past. Tbucky Jones was dealt didnt get franchise value for 1 season. Cassel did not receive 14M per season.

Samuel did and that was a mistake. The Eagles over paid for a soft CB.

If Mankins doesnt want to sign a reasonable deal Id rather trade now and move on.

    Good

If some team wants to pay Mankins 10m per that can have him.

Brady's prior deal averaged just over $12M per. But in 2007 he only took home $6M. Asante Samuel took home $7.9M and his cap hit was the highest on the team. Mankins tag places him second highest to Brady in 2011 both in cash and cap. Yet neither ever made remotely what Brady was and is making...

Time remains for the Pats to still do something in FA. Players get injured all the time in training camp and teams have to bring in a guy to play while he learns on the fly.

NE needs draft picks for 2012, not 2011 where they already had plenty. So Mankins could very well be dealt.

The fact remains that Mankins would be the 2nd highest in terms of cap hit. Almost double of the other OL.

Since he is already working out with the team, it would seem that even if he gets franchised he won't be sitting out this year. That is good news.

Really? Injury replacements are a crap shoot and you either end up trading for one or picking up a street FA depending on your level of desperation. Mankins can't be traded until or unless he signs his tender and he likely won't do that until it's time to play. Then it's really too late to replace him with what might be left on the scrap heep at a position where effectiveness of the unit is often predicated on not just talent but cohesiveness developed over time.

Why do we need draft picks for 2012...we already have two first rounders...and two second rounders.

Bill doesn't care about where Mankins fits in the cap slot for one season, he only cares about where he fits in the unit budget or contratual pecking order long term. He didn't think Asante was worth almost $8M long term, but he had no issue with paying him that for one season. This OL isn't taking up that much space relative to it's mission given they are down to two veteran starters and one is on the salary only back end of an old deal. The rest are either inexpensive rookies or sophomores or developmental players earning backup $$$. Bill isn't willing to give Mankins 6 times $8M+ and the requisite $25M in guaranteed money, but he has no issue with giving him $10.5 once given what he's already gotten out of him over the last 6 seasons relatively inexpensively.

This team is comfortably (several millions) under an anticipated cap in the $120M range. And that's before any restructures of which there are potentially several...like Kaczur and TBC and even Warren and Bodden. Even Brady's deal could be tinkered with (converting his 2011 roster bonus) if they need space in the here and now.

I'm sorry that you were unable to grasp the simple concepts I was putting forth, and it's probably because I didn't explain myself very well. Let's try it again. Every player the Patriots have tagged has gotten paid the franchise tag value or better, by one team or another. Every player that I was able to find the info on (could not find Jones year one payout) has made at least as much money in year one of the contract, when you add all signing bonuses and the like, as they would have gotten had they just stayed with the franchise tag.

In other words, "Let" has nothing to do with it. Mankins is getting paid unless the Patriots rescind the tag, in which case, Mankins will still get paid, but the Patriots won't yield any benefits from it. You can like it or not, but that's what's going to happen.

I thought it was callled blather and BS.

Again, nobody is disputing that Mankins wont receive at least as much as the tag amount in signing bonus over a long term contract. Cassels value was set at 14 mil for one season, but he wasnt paid 14 mil per season over the life of his contract.

    OK, it is written.

BTW, do you know when the lockout will be over? Thanks.

Cassel was not expected to get franchise QB value over the life of a long-term contract. However, he did get a big contract and made as much money in year one as he would have under the franchise tag.

Mankins is getting paid. That doesn't take a fortune teller. It just takes a basic understanding of the franchise tag.
