Imus was desperate for ratings. Even a first grader could see that that's where Imus' comments were going. I personally hate Maher's guts. I think he's a sniveling little piece of trash. But I will say that this exact sort of thing is his schtick. He's been doing it for years. He can get away with because his comments are used in the context of comedy. Imus couldn't because his comments were used in the context of shocking the nation to draw in ratings. Both are laughing their way to the bank, the only difference being that Imus can't go for a stroll out in public when in a big city anymore.

So what the difference between Maher and Imus? Do the jokes reflect the same assumptions on the part of both of them?

Maher's joke was mocking the racist Republican perception of Obama and right wing rhetoric.

Imus' joke was mocking a group of women because of the color of their skin.

Yeah, no difference there at all

Fog doesn't read posts, he has a rotating list of prepared responses synthesized from various right wing sources. Consider yourself lucky that you happened to get one that at least coincided with the thread topic.

Poppyc0ck. I use multiple sources for my rotating list of synthesized responses. Like Wilted7, for example.

The joke was making fun of the right's racism, not making fun of blacks. I'm sure if you asked a black person they could make that distinction clear for you.

The point is he is saying that Republicans are racist, and that's where I think it stopped being a joke. Maher is a tool. I don't know why anyone listens to him.

Joke or not though, it's really ignorant to assume that an entire group of people is racist. That sort of thinking gave birth to racism itself. Therefore, even though that's his schtick, Maher is just as ignorant as the people he is making fun of.

    Yes.
I don't for one second believe that Imus is racist. What he said could have been taken as racist, but I don't think he knew it was. His show sucked so I didn't care what happened to him.

I like Maher. We athiests all stick together. It's an athiest thing...you wouldn't understand.

You are a source -- and yes, "priceless", too -- that just keeps on giving. I just had to say that.

Where did he assume an entire group of people is racist? I'd like you to name a person he put into this "group."

And how, exactly, did labeling an entire group of people racist give birth to racism? I'm not sure but I think that's an oxymoron.

Maybe. But I do understand one thing ..... "atheist" is spelled "atheist".
