Way late to the party but read this yesterday.
I think my feelings on the subject generally reflect most of the sentiments in this thread.
The trade definitely stung a bit as Mankins is one of my favorite players, overrated or not. I thought he was our toughest player and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy being in the thick of chaos.
I think, all things considered, that this is a good and fair trade for both sides. I don't think it's a genius move and an absolute steal, nor do I think Bill got the raw end either.
Like others have said, Patriots get a player in Wright who should have an impact at one of our greatest areas of need before the end of the season, a fourth round draft pick (which I think is fair given Mankins probably has 3 years left tops as a starting guard), and the freeing up of capital to (hopefully) utilize in other acquisitions or extensions before the end of the year. The large downside, of course, is we lose our best player at a position we are already thin and/or unproven at, somewhat similar to our WR situation last year.
The Bucs get a once All-Pro guard who I think still has more left in the tank than some are giving him credit for, at a position they are in desperate need. It makes sense for them to pony up the cash because it should have a more noticeable impact for the team.
As it stands, I think it appears to be beneficial for both parties. Whether it ultimately turns out to be better for either team will depend on the future performance of the players traded.
