I thought the offense played nastier when Mankins was out.

Agreed; I am thinking like SwedishPat kinda said that he has been troubled by injury all year. He hasn't seemed to dominate ANYBODY (not like he did previously) whenever he was in (as either "healthy" start or "questionable" start)-. And his inconsistency is probably worse to have than a consistent lower (possible maximum) performance from a Thomas or Mcdonald.
Disagree a little with you here-PATRIOTSFANINPA said:Mankins is a great player but his absence to me would not be as big of a loss as it would be if we lost either Tackle in Solder or Vollmer.....pass rush getting to Brady from the edge is my biggest concern, nothing good comes from a blindside hit from the wide side.
G is still a critical position to get right; LT/RT are also important; but you can always help them out with a TE if reqd. If the Gs stink; TB gets pass rush right in his face (a la Giants) immediately. Ack your point about injuries resulting from blind-side; but for passing-game effectiveness; minimum-effecitve G play (IMO) is more important.
