American women expected to live FIVE YEARS less than their mothers - and scientists don't know why | Mail Online

Woman are living longer in Northeast and Southwest but dying sooner elsewhere. (Blue states sans Texas). Without sounding heartless, I wonder how this impacts Social Security with these people paying in but not collecting as long...
If I were a Democrat, I'd look it as better long term prognosis with most of the negative impact being felt in "red states." The question has to be why?? Alcohol? Drugs?? health care access???
It is scary as I always assumed each generation would live longer...

There seems to be a pretty clear correspondence between the life expectancy map and a map of obesity rates in the US. That would be my first guess.

Based on what little information is offered, one might think that access to good health care may be a variable, early diagnosis.. that cluster in the SE is concerning.

Would like to see this done in about 10 years with the introduction of vaginal probes for just about anything(an women's reluctance to avoid that) and no planned parenthood, which excels in early diagnosis.. then it will be "gods will", the Affordable Care Act or other such nonsense.

You have to be an idiot to be against Planned Parenthood. To see them as only a source for abortions is just crazy. They do so much more. In fact I would bet that they encourage, help and support more women to give birth than to get abortions.

Having actually lived in the south and not just going by some preconceived bigoted mentality. I can tell you that women in the south drink more, smoke more and a good portion of them are heavier than their counterparts in the northeast or west. So unless planned parenthood has all of a sudden turned in to Curves and weight watchers it has zero to do with that. Unhealthy lifestyles are more accepted in the south.

Women have a lot of stress ... they have to put up with men ... God bless them.

A good number of men would quit if they had to live with the burdens of a women.

Lots of care free men out there who dump their problems on women ... most notably raising kids.

.... and yes I am serious.

If we had the burdens of women, we'd BE women IP! Can't have one without the other.

As far as comparing the sexes....women have it all over men in many area's. Maturity being at the top of my list...

If my father didn't have my mother, I honestly don't know if he could have functioned.

In my marriage my wife and I are pretty much equals ... slightly different tasks over the years but equals none the less. I see more marriages where the women holds it together than the other way around. Rarely does a man raise the children because the wife took off ... usually the other way around. Exceptions for everything ... but nature planned it out fairly well ... both do need each other for sure ... especially when we had to survive in nature ... i mean we made it.

The nexus of all the variables mentioned here is poverty with no safety net... except of course the war on women part (planned parenthood diagnoses). In other words, red state policy, combined with the most needy being most concentrated in said red states.

Things that could exacerbate this trend:
    - Another economic collapse. It hits the poor worst and first. Remember every time you're wailing and gnashing your teeth because a corporate raider might lose his bonus; there are other people who lose jobs and can't get another. Some of them are fine... others are already choosing which bill to juggle, and aren't going to go get that lump checked out.

    - Continued darlings of the right on the health care front: Repealing the Affordable Care Act and Defunding Planned Parenthood. Hate them for being socialist or abortionist, they're both very good for women's health, particularly poor women's health.

    - Assorted laws that negatively affect the economic status of women, or tolerance of state laws that do. It's especially important to have ready access to birth control -- most 16 year old girls with a baby don't improve their own lot in life. In fact, the status of women is the best indicator internationally of how well your society is going to do in competition with other societies. You tie up your resources in dealing with the sequelae of anti-woman legislation, and lose half your talent in the process.

Things that could reverse this trend:
    - the opposite of the above.
    - (possibly) social change toward healthier living, but don't hold your breath. The gyms and juice bars aren't located next to the trailer part for a reason.
    - Getting divorced from this guy

As are we as time goes on roles change, I used to do the laundry exclusively, now I do the grocery shopping and she does the laundry. She paints, I clean up. I mow, she trims. Occasionally we travel alone to visit friends..

Things change over time, and we adapt dependent on our needs and the needs of loved ones..

Back to the topic at hand, wonder if smoking is a variable, in the SE states cigarettes are less expensive... smoking on average shortens your life by 13 years... smoking is also more acceptable in certain areas..

True but since these are habits that are not new, why are life spans decreasing when they had been increasing in spite of these deleterious habits.? One other thing that may be incidental, if you overlay a map of where meth is endemic, it corresponds to to this map as well.....

Also incidental I'm sure, is the rate of domestic violence which ends up in death is highest in red states. (9 out of 10)
