lester signs with the cubs

Lester is dead to me now. I wish nothing but bad things for him for the rest of his life.

Phukk him, phukk Theo the lefty boy blunder from Brookline, and phukk Boston-hater Joe Madden.

I hope the Cubs go another 100 years before they win a World Series.

dumbest front office management since heywod sullivan fail to send the paperwork to keep fisk, burleson, and lynn on time in 1979. lester was begging to stay with the sox back before he was traded, he said he'd take a home town discount. but no the Sox FO had to screw with him, repeatedly low balling him.

I just can't put myself in the shoes of the local Sox fan, willing to shell out $100 for one ticket, $11 for a beer, whatever ridiculous amount parking costs, for the privilege of watching a bunch of light hitting .270 hitters who make $20 million per year play a sport that I consider one notch above worm racing on the excitement scale. I'd rather assume Creepy Rob Lowe's character and watch old people swim laps at the nursing home pool.
Congrats to Lester.......I am a big believer that change is healthy and adds excitement to ones life. And.....the dude gets to play a ton of day games which has to add to the quality of life, especially for his family.
Congrats to Theo for stickin it to Lucchino....well done
Congrats to............the Sox....believe it or not. In this post-PEDs era, pitchers are thriving and I see no need to go all in for that special pitcher to combat anemic lineups. ML quality depth should be priority one

If they move Miami over to the AL and both teams play each other in the World Series with the Cubs sweeping, the scene in Back to the Future Part II will be correct. "I wish I could go back to the beginning of the season and put some money on the Cubbies".

Shattered to see the big guy go! Wanted him back so badly. We have zero pitchers who I am confident in, Bucholz went backwards last season
Tomorrow is not Opening Day. I guarantee you the starting rotation will include at least 2 guys who are right now on major league rosters elsewhere and at least one of them will be a #1. R E L A X...

Here's why I wrote the line above...

In 2013, AL teams scored an average of 703 runs for the season
In 2014, AL teams scored an average of 677 runs

In 2013, AL teams allowed an average 3.99 runs/game
In 2014, AL teams allowed an average 3.72 runs/game

In 2013, the Sox's ERA was 3.79....6th best in the AL
In 2014, the Sox's ERA was 4.01.....11th best...a rise of .22 runs/game .
Factors that raised this ERA.....Lester was traded, Bucholtz reverted, Peavy and Dubront were given 37 starts, minor league tryouts. In other words.....the Sox pitching staff ran a lot of garbage out to the mound and team ERA rose only .22

In 2013, the Sox scored 853 runs....1st in AL
In 2014, the Sox scored 634 runs....11th in AL
Thanks to an aggressive front office that went Cuban shopping and hit the FA market with gusto......the worst hitting outfield of 2013 has been replaced. The black hole at 3rd has been filled nicely. With a healthy 1st baseman, a better solution at lead off (Betts...I pray they keep him) than Sizemore, Holt, Bradley.....In other words, this team should be a plus hitting team again vs the anemic product that found its way on the field last year.

To summarize....Sox pitching added .22 runs/game while Sox batters created 1.34 less runs/game in 2014....Where the problem is is fairly obvious.

My ultimate point....in 2014 the Sox relied on too many minor league caliber bats and garbage starters....and all have or will be replaced (except Bucholtz). Sure losing a low ERA guy like Lester is a challenge and must be counterbalanced by back end starters that perform at a higher level than Peavy, Doubront, and the minor leaguers they trotted out.
One final stat to emphasize the diminishing hitting skills in MLB...In the AL last year there were 42 starters who pitched 100 innings or more and had lower than league average ERA's (3.72)....and many were not household names.Only 30 AL starters were sub 3.72 in 2013.
My point......more pitching options exist today to defeat these anemic offenses and the Sox need not panic because Lester has left the building. Remember...the Sox were failing miserably with Lester and Lackey in the house last year....there problems were with the stick....and these problems look to be more than solved

continued....
If the Miley trade is real....combined withe Porcello for Cespedes trade, the Sox are shopping off the very big list of above average pitchers who are very cost effective. Sure, Miley had a higher ERA last year...but if you check his road splits vs home....it is very respectable....it beats the hell out of Peavy and Doubront.
...reports say Sox after 1 more starter
The SOSH geeks are all saying these new pitchers are durable sinker/groundball specialists which contrasts the long ball liability that was Lacky, Peavy, Doubront. New philosophy??? Force these anemic offenses to string hits together??
edit.....Masterson signs as well......the ultimate buy low option. Not exactly the 3rd signing I had in mind though. Another groundball specialist.
Here's hoping they continue to target a premium arm.

Fair call, Porcello in!

Lester is way over paid ... not sorry to see him go.
He's a 1b/2a type pitcher ....
I still think we end up with Shields.
So far we have traded away players of little value to us.

If Sox start strong can always trade for that #1 at any point they still have lots of trade bait.
