The 20 yards allowed was the 5th (tied) lowest in team history which includes 789 games. It was the fewest allowed since 2005.
The 1.25 ypc was the 6th lowest in franchise history and also the best since 2005.
The rushing yards margin was the 40th best in team history, and the largest in any game since 2008.

Yes it is only 1 game, but it was the best run D game in 7 years and one of the few best in 50 years.

It wouldn't be ridiculous to think that they could get close to that again this week. The Cardinals were held to 43 rushing yards against the Seahawks last week, and 15 of that was from a WR.

Holding the Cards to 30 yards or fewer on the ground would give the Pats the lowest rush yards allowed through 2 games since 1943. Even if they allow 50, that's be sixth best of the last 55 years.

Wouldn't it be the Defense's prerogative to shut down Larry Fitzgerald this week much like the Patriots shut down Chris Johnson last week?

Either way, the Run D was damn impressive in week 1. Without looking past Arizona, Baltimore is going to be a different beast all together.

they are much more worried about fitzgerald like they were johnson which is why i think they will give up more rushing yards

What we know BTM is the Patriots game plan to take away the opposition's strength. If the Pass Defense can prove it's up to the Run Defense in planning and execution, then we're in for a hell of an improved D this year. Outside of Megatron, Fitz is going to provide a crucial test.

I'm suprised there were 5 better performances by our franchise. 20 yards is nasty

That 2005 team had an awesome stretch there at the end of the season. The whacked out thing was that it was coming off one of the worst stretches in NFL history. I could be remembering it wrong, but I believe I recall hearing that the 8 game stretch from week 4 through week 13 the Pats allowed the most yards in any 8 game stretch in NFL history, immediately followed by a 4 game stretch where they allowed the least yards in a 4 game stretch in NFL history.

    Week - Total yds allowed
    4 - 431
    5 - 400
    6 - 432
    8 - 394
    9 - 453
    10 - 437
    11 - 425
    12 - 420
    13 - 164 (41 rush yards)
    14 - 183 (14 rush yards)
    15 - 138 (30 rush yards)
    16 - 171 (40 rush yards)

    Week 4-12: 424 yds/g
    Week 13-16: 164 yds/g (31.2 rush yds/g)

That has to be one of the strangest "stats" in NFL history.

Our defensive is going to be tough to run on all year. As long as we stay healthy. Two big wide-bodies at DT who can move. 3 tough god damn lb's; Hightower, Spikes and Mayo. Chandler Jones appears to play the run well for a rookie de. Ninko knows his job where he's playing. String it out and make em turn into those nasty lb's.

It really does look impressive and you could see it in the pre-season. I do believe that Spikes is the key, not just his physical play but the energy he appears to bring...stay healthy my friend.

Spikes is one of the best out there when it comes to the run

A very encouraging post but...I'm pretty sure the Pats did not exist in 1943.

    No Jersey Selected

Consider Bruschi recovering and returning from stroke, then getting his feet under him.

I took his post to mean that the "since 1943" was in reference to league records, not just the Pats but I could be wrong.

Right. Other teams did though, and there were two teams that didn't allow many yards. As far as I'm concerned, allowing 30 yards would give them the best first two games of run defense of all time, but I gotta acknowledge those guys so nobody corrects me for excluding them:eek:

That defense was quietly playing as well as any BB defense at the end of the season. In the WC round they were dominant, gave up 3 points and Asante had a pick-6. Against Denver they were shutting them down until a barrage of turnovers and a horrible PI call which gave Denver 1st and goal. Without the TO's Denver would've scored 10 points max in that game, maybe as little as 3. Then who knows where they could have taken us :( They really turned it around once the DB situation settled down, I remember a carousel at SS and the Duane Starks disaster.

The 2010 defense had a similar turnaround after the Thanksgiving Lions game but then were meh in the playoffs.
