If he keeps playing the way he has there will be more coin to be had.

He's a UDFA who's on his 3rd year. The extension will get him through year 4 and into his UFA season. It's essentially a nice little bit of extra money beyond an RFA tender (it was 2.74 million for the top tender this year and, as a UDFA, the Patriots would have had to offer that in order to keep Love next season, because the UDFA number wouldn't have dissuaded anyone).

Love's agent sums it up nicely:

Love Kyle Love. His game keeps progressing and is now at the point of being a solid starter with more consistency and disruption. Who knows, he may be considered a premier DT by the end of that extension.

So the two sides couldn't come together on a longer extension, but decided they could get something done for one year to give everybody a bit more security? Good on them for the compromise.

can't think of a more deserving player.. If he was a stock I would buy him in bulk because I see him as a player on the rise..

Love is a beast :rocker: Much deserved and an honest way for both sides to handle the RFA years of a over acheiving player. Patriots take a little added risk and the player who is over acheiving gets some up front money but the cost is about the same. Have I mentioned Love is a beast.

Agreed, and I think there's a little more than that in it for the team, too.

As a player under contract, Love is certain to be a full participant in the offseason program -- and can't have other teams whispering in his ear during a time when the Pats are likely to be trying to negotiate a long-term deal with him. Seems like a smart and good-faith way to handle a UDFA who projects to starter in his 3rd year.

Seems reasonable for both parties. I think love is going to explode this year, and will (rightfully so) be looking for a big money contract when all is said and done. He's shown promise in the past and has been a man among boys in the first few preseason games. Hopefully it correlates to the regular season. If so, opposing online will have their hands full with he and Vince alone. Both demanding double teams type respect (which love has been dominating so far btw...)...

We might finally have a real battle for best group on the team, I expect a big year for this defense assuming the health of a few players (vince, love, mayo, jones)

You think a little ol' thing like being under contract would stop the tampering Rats?

This is probably good for the locker room too on the heels of a couple of FA splurges that didn't pan out (although one has the potential to still grate if his teamates liked him and feel he's getting shafted). Mentally and physically tough blue collar guys who weren't highly touted draft picks who bust their ass to make it here as overachievers will be at least incrementally taken care of. Don't want to become an organization that appears to only reward it's marquee players.

:) Yeah, tampering is rife in this league. But there's still a difference between dropping some hints to Love's agent vs. bringing him in for a visit, wining and dining him, and telling him how much they look forward to wheeling barrows full of money up to his door.

Very good - I'm a big fan of Love, and his value is only going to increase. Honestly, I kind of would have preferred that this was a two or three year extension, if they could lock him up at that kind of money. I doubt that his agent would have gone for that, though; I'm sure everyone involved believes that his value is only going to rise--perhaps dramatically--from here on out.
