We all already knew this on this board, but here it is from a certified "draft expert."

Kiper likes Cassel over Stafford and Sanchez, no contest. [merged]

This guy is a fairly serious draft analyst, ESPN ties aside. I thought this was interesting:

Kiper likes Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

Some pretty high praise for our hottest commodity. Given recent articles positing that media has an influence on these decisions, I think this kind of thing is very helpful, along with so much belief Cassel is staying in New England. Someone is going to have to throw the kitchen sink at New England to get Matt, methinks. Hard to accept that the people thinking we'll be lucky to get a #2 have actually spent any time pondering the situation.

BTW, I posted this here as it is really Patriot related draft talk, comparing Cassel to draft value. Please move it if I made a bad call on that.

That can't hurt I guess....but does anyone have a sense as to how Kiper is viewed throughout the league? I understand he's been obsessed with the draft since forever and is viewed as the expert of experts, but he still kinda seems like a buffoon to me.

    Wow.

Cassel could be had cheaper in terms of draft picks too, I would think. If I were the Patriots I would jump all over something like Detroit's #2 this year and next, they could get their QB, LT at #1 and a good defensive player at #20.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

I keep seeing this stuff and have to think no one who believes this has really thought it through. He's the equivalent of a high first-round QB, with un-tapped upside and League experience (successful).

Re: Kiper likes Cassel over Stafford and Sanchez, no contest.

I still firmly believe the pats will say anything to maximize his market value.......

I just don't see a situation where he and his new salary would fit on the pats with the other needs the pats have......I look at it this way......what's the point of having cassel for insurance if the pats won't be able to help their defense? using the draft for defense is great, but the pats will need some more immediate upgrades in order to contend next year

keeping cassel both eats cap space and prevent getting anything for him.....just doesnt make sense to me

I don't disagree, but Bill seems a little tough to predict on this stuff.

I think in Bill's mind he's keeping him until a knock-out offer shows up. Makes planning easier. And I fully expect that knock-out offer to appear.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

Nice to see Cassel getting some recognition by someone influential outside of Lombardi. A lot of people listen to Kiper, rightly or wrongly. Maybe this will get a few people to think about Cassel more seriously.

Given what a high rate 1st round QBs have of being relative busts (Joey Harrington, David Carr, Byron Leftwich, and Alex Smith were all top 10 picks), spending a high first on Cassel seems like a relatively good bet. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there's probably no more than a 33% chance that Stafford and Sanchez will be as good as Cassel is now, and an equal chance that they will be total busts. More than any other position, raw athletic talent does not translate into success at QB.

I'm not sure what you're saying exactly, I think you're saying that Cassel will cost (in draft picks) as much or more than Stafford or Sanchez and I disagree. Stafford would cost Detroit the #1 pick and I am confident the Patriots would take less than that for Cassel.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

What you're saying is you think he's only worth a second rounder. That's ridiculous. And I think he's a safer bet than Sanchez at #1, anyway.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

Kiper needs to speak to Tom Jackson. Jackson would point out to him that Cutler is better than a healthy Tom Brady. So there is no way in hell that Cassel could be better than Cutler.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

I said two high second round picks. Cassel comes with a big contract and I'm not saying what I think he's worth but what I would trade him for. I would trade him "below value" because we gain $14+M in the process so there's additional value we gain in the trade.

Obviously I would take more than that if offered. But if we got two high #2s and saved the $14M that works for me.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

The concession I would make is that KC's #2 is very close to 1st round and in this draft that equates to phenomenal value.

    Ummm . . .

You said I undervalued him wanting Detroit's #2 this year and next then you say you're happy with just KC's #2 this year . . . and Detroit's #2 is higher than KC's.

Actually, I got interrupted in real life and didn't finish before hitting the submit button. KC's #2 this year and #1 next year is where I was headed.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

Yep id take that as well. Or maybe KC's no #2, Tony G, and a #2 next year for MC and a 3rd

If I were the Vikes though I would be all over Cassel at pick 19. I mean they are a decent QB away from a legit SB run, they have the best RB in the NFL and their OLine is better than NE's. I like MC and kinda hopes he ends up there

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

Vikings or TB would be where I'd send him if it were that simple, hehe.

I think if KC makes a bid, we'll have a sudden, clear idea of just how good he is projected to be.

Re: Kiper: Cassel over Stafford, Sanchez

Nice to hear praise for Matt, but I always got the impression Mel Kiper was viewed as kind of a joke by actual successful team managers and coaches. That's why his "reaches" are usually kind of scoffed at.

Doesn't mean the Lions wouldn't listen to him though, they seem to like the popular picks ;)
