    It appears from
    http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playerdetail.aspx?player=3113

that the Patriots picked up his 2008 $4 million option bonus this year.

I think this because USAToday lists his 2007 cap number as $1,566,720
I think that his cap number consists of the following.
    106,720 - offseason workout bonus
    600,000 - salary
60,000 - prorated portion of 2007 signing bonus
800,000 - prorated portion of 2007 option bonus

I also think this because USAToday list his 2007 cash intake was $5,006,720
I think that his cash number consists of the following.
    106,720 - offseason workout bonus
    600,000 - salary
    300,000 - 2007 signing bonus
    4,000,000 - 2007 option bonus

    What?

We just gave him 4 million for blocking well on ST?

    That would be thoroughly miserable.

I hereby select denial as my coping mechanism.

Is it possible USA Today has misinterpreted his contract? Negotiating a roster bonus and then giving the player the money so early strikes me as something that the Patriots wouldn't do.

I agree that the Patriots wouldn't do that.

But the discrepancy can also be explained by the contract being different from what we previously thought it was.

Wouldn't we be better off moving some of Stallworth's money into this year?

At the end of the day I think we'll (reluctantly) let Stallworth go and have Washington/Jackson competing for his #2 spot; also possibly Gaffney if he re-signs.

Okay, well there goes the one guy we all "knew" was gone. I'm just flummoxed, and refuse to speculate until I consult a couple Nostradamus quatrains and Holy Blood, Holy Grail. If I get desperate I might throw in some sabermetrics.

I seriously don't get it. But this time I admit it.

But USA Today that you linked listed "Other Bonus" as $ 2,106,720

That would appear to be the Offseason Workout Bonus of $106,720 and a bonus of $2M.

Also note that the USA Today numbers, by their own account, do not add up on the Cash side.

    600k + 300k + 2,106,720 = 3,006,720 NOT 5,006,720.

Something isn't right about that page.

not sure where the $4 million option was sighted on the link, and that would be ridiculous if true, due to the importance of re-signing more prominent players

They did the same thing to Donte Stallworth. Say his total salary is $9M+ and his cap number is a million higher as a result. They say they count all bonus money in the year in which a deal is signed, and I think they are mistakenly doing the same with option bonuses this year.

No way the Patriots would pay those before they have to since they are not recoverable should something unthinkable happen...

I don't know if this is true, but if it was, I wouldn't be too upset by that. BB might be considering the fact that they don't want to lose Randy, Asante, and Donte, so they have to make some tough decisions. I would be OK with Randy, CJ, Kelley, Wes, and possibly Jabar as our 5 WRs next year and hopefully have enough to resign Asante as well. We haven't really seen Kelley on offense much this year for obvious reasons but that doesn't mean he can't be a good #2 or #3 for us. Obviously, the biggest two offseason moves would be to resign Randy and Asante.

Now wait just a minute!

Washington is a ST'er at best and Jackson is a bust until proven otherwise who is lucky to have a damn roster spot. Its Gaffney or Stallworth next year or someone new.

Actually I've been pretty happy with the way Washington has approached his responsibilities, and though he has just 9 catches he's grabbed them amid few opportunities.

I don't want to write off a re-negotiated Stallworth contract, not to mention bringing back Moss but I don't feel like a $4 million bonus would be a salary cap waste in an expanded role.

According to Reiss earlier this month the bonus was an option bonus. Giving a player his option bonus early is something that the Pats have done - Seymour in 2006.

Is it possible that USAToday made a mistake?? Yes. Hence the use of the word speculation.

Do I think that the Patriots picked up the option bonus this year?? Yes.
